five1oh Posted March 7, 2022 Author Report Share Posted March 7, 2022 So one issue I knew the car had when I got it was Reid mentioned when sitting in traffic it would overheat. He owned the car for 15 years and honestly hadn't driven it much at all in the past few. I forget when but he mentioned he had the original radiator re-cored and then when waiting in line to get into a show it starting overheating and he found tiny pin holes steaming out of the upper expansion tank. He had a few welded up but said it would likely keep happening. Last week as you know I drove it to the Hayward meet which was about 45 min one way from me. Car did fine there and back and didn't get hot but I noticed when I got home it had burped nasty brown water out the upper drain tube (which wasn't there). So I decided to run the car and flush the radiator. I ended up flushing it 6 times lol. TONS of brown water coming out from rust in the block. Once it got clear I filled with radiator fluid. Since then I have put another 150 miles on it with no issue. I also added a drain tube and a overflow bottle as well as stole the 13psi cap from the Z. It had a 7psi on it when I got it. Didn't take any pics of the process but you can see I drove it onto the sidewalk so I had more room for a drain bucket. I removed the gas door to have them photo match and mix me up a couple spray cans of single stage. I haven't done this before so curious how it will turn out. I traded Ralph a BRE 240z spoiler for one of his extra hako front spoilers so yet another part I won't have to source from Japan and get crushed on shipping. I took all 3 kids with me since we were headed to my niece's birthday party in Brentwood after. Car ran awesome and another 100 miles in the books. My friend Noli got a couple of rollers for me. Got some more brown in the overflow but car ran ok, started getting a little hot on the way home. Thanks to Tom from Secret Factory and Rasel from BuynowJapan....it's nice to not have to wait the usual 3-5 months...... The two sets I ordered at JCCS will likely not arrive until this August..... The order that I just placed was literally inventory that was "IN STOCK" and listed for sale on ebay. I found a set of 2 on ebay because that means in stock. I needed 4 so I messaged directly if 4 were available. He said yes and removed the ebay ad and sold to me directly. five1oh Posted March 24, 2022 Author Report Share Posted March 24, 2022 Got the radiator swapped out yesterday in preparation for the drive to James' this weekend. Unfortunately I did not have much time and found the fan is ever so slightly contacting the lower lip of the new radiator. Thankfully I did not fill the radiator and plan to remove tonight and do some slight trimming on the fan since I don't have a different one to swap in at the moment. Super happy with the condition of this car once radiator was out. The radiator support is rust free as is the lower front frame between the radiator and grill. The one on my 2 door was completely disintegrated with rust. The new radiator is nearly identical but the mounting tabs are slightly different and it is a 3 core vs a 2 core. Looking forward to putting miles on it this weekend. No more contact with the lower lip of the radiator. Drove it for an hour on the freeway, in traffic, etc and stayed cool the whole time. So happy! Also, no more brown water yay!
