1969 Datsun 510 2 door - "ZPZ 046"

Recommended Posts

Car ran awesome and then the next morning I took it to a Cars and Coffee and then the Hayward Datsun meet.

All in all about 400 miles on the first weekend after likely a 20 year slumber! 🙂

Thanks for taking the car on @DARIN 510!!!!

Darin finished up my air cleaner so I swung by to pick it up.  At this point car started running rough and occasionally was backfiring inside the carb>

SO GOOD!!!!!

Peep the fuel filter....

Made it home with some more popping...so I guess sitting for 20 years didn't help my gas tank lol...

I changed out the filter and the car started running good again...

Drove it some more and seemed to be running good again.

Then I finally installed my lonely driver cup holder.  Love it.  BOOM 3 Bluetooth speaker fits perfectly.

So car started having carb issues again and I thought the dirty fuel may have clogged the jets so I took mine apart and used some carb cleaner and put back.  Sadly I am still having issues and I can't figure it out but with the amount of rust I saw my next step is to clean the tank and supply line.

The car runs great at idle and at low throttle but when I try to give it more gas it starts to sputter.  Hopefully my fuel pump is still good and maybe the fuel tank pickup line is clogged.

This "Stock" approach is so diametrically opposite your previous 510.    If you are trying to keep it US market stock, no JDM grille.  😁

LOL!!!

It is taking SOOOOO much restraint.  Uggh.  😐

So I have been working on the gas tank for the last week plus LOL.

It is currently on round 2 of soaking with CLR and vinegar.  The first time around I had the tank stored laying flat (pictures below) and it worked amazingly well but I only got about 70% clean (top did not).

This time around I made sure to fill it COMPLETELY and store vertically!  Tonight I will be draining it and taking pictures and then moving on to the next step.

So this is the method I am following:

0. Drained tank and removed

1. I let the tank air out a few days to get completely dry

2. Filled with vinegar and CLR

3. Will empty and rinse thoroughly with water and then fill with water and baking soda (to neutralize the vinegar).  Let soak another day or two.

4. Will use gas tank etch

5. Use gas tank coat

6. Reinstall

Well, the ratio of vinegar to CLR looks pretty obvious. Do you add water or just the other 2 components?

Awesome use of one of those foldable work benches.

LOL.

So the pic with the jugs.....I bought Walmart out of them and sadly they were 1/2 gallon jugs.  I have never done this before and I thought that by filling the tank half way and shaking multiple times I could cover the whole thing....(I left it sealed for almost 3 days and shook it at least 10 times per day.

Because of not being able to fill the tank full I only used 1/2 gallon of the CLR the first go around. So basically that photo had 4.5 gallons of vinegar and .5 gallons of CLR.

The photo of it vertical the tank was COMPLETELY full.  essentially I used 11 gallons of vinegar and 1/2 gallon of CLR

After almost 2 days soaking I emptied the tank.  Results were amazing.  I also spent about 30 minutes filling/shaking the tank with baking soda and water (I dumped 3 pounds of baking soda in).

Prior to baking soda flush:

After the baking soda flush I got out most of the water and then poured in this bottle of metal prep.  Tonight I will dry the tank completely out and then in a day or two will be using the fuel tank sealer:

Ugh, fuel tank issues are such a pain in the ass.

I'm unsure if people do this with car tanks, but with my old bikes in the past, I've thrown in a bunch of chain and nails and shit to work as an abrasive. It's obviously a hell of a lot harder to shake a full size tank around for it to do anything, but it does wonders.

Nice work, that skyline... so jealous.

  • 3 weeks later...

So finally finished my gas tank.  Sealed it and waited 5 days and then installed with my Maddat fuel filler I purchased a couple years ago.  Such a nice piece.
