1969 Datsun 510 2 door - "ZPZ 046"

Recommended Posts

So my life found another one........a few months ago I started interviewing for a new job after working for the same company for 17 years.  I ended up being offered the job and it was very bittersweet because the opportunity was great but I was leaving coworkers that had become family.  I had NO PLANS to purchase ANY car let alone another 510.  Fast forward to 3 days before my last day (4/3/19) and my daily beater (92 Integra) started getting very hot when not in motion.  I checked the oil and no issues but it didn't occur to me to check anything else.

That day I was talking to a friend and was convinced it was a water pump which is a job I didn't want to do because of all the work involved.  Scrolling through my IG and I get a personal message from a friend sharing another friends post.  As soon as I saw the car my heart beat started racing because it was the exact spec of my first car at 16 years old and it was 100% original in awesome shape.  Furthermore I knew the person who bought it and new he was in the business of flipping cars.  I messaged him immediately and he said I could have first dibs since we were friends even though he already had 3 other interested parties.

I leveraged the situation of my Integra with my loving wife and made plans to buy the car 2 days later on 4/3 my last day of work.

Sergio sent me the following pictures which cemented my need to buy the car:

Everything is there except the heater box and the jack handle.  It has a damaged passenger side front fender emblem and marker light but I am pretty sure I have a replacement in my stash.  James Johnson is going to hook it up with the heater core.  The car is completely original with a still working smog pump and all the fittings.  Obviously that will need addressing LOL.  It is believed to have under 70k original miles too.  The last reported mileage 64,066 in 1992 and it has only been driven 6k miles since as it has been stored mostly the past 20 years.

My plans for this car is to recreate my first car as it came (visually) with some basic modifications in addition that I feel it needs.  My car came low/loud and somewhat clean although it lacked proper mods.  It was the original paint like this one in good shape and had stock steel wheels up front with 13x7 red libre's out back.  It was slammed using cut springs and wood blocks since the springs were too short lol.  It was missing the back seat and had a stock front passenger seat with a Summit Racing cheap fiberglass bucket for the drivers seat.  It was the stock 1600.

I hope I can find some other pictures from the day I picked it up.  This one is about 6 months into ownership:

So far I have accumulated the following parts for this build:

13x7 Libre's from my friend Ralph

Dual Weber DCOE 40's and manifold

Troy Ermish coated header

Next up is to buy some coilovers and check the brakes.  I have all new stock brakes ready to go but won't replace unless needed.

Once I get the fuel/exhaust hooked up I am going to have the dents pulled out and then polish up the paint to see if it still shines.  Looking it over I am optimistic it will look great.

So once I heard of the car I immediately went to a friends to hook up the trailer the night before my last day at the old job.  I was able to leave work at noon to drive down to Gilroy to get the car.  I was so excited to see it and fire it up.  Was able to drive it a block and then load it on the trailer.  The carburetor needs a rebuild as it was flooding out but since I am removing the exhaust manifold and everything else I am not going to waste my time.

Once I got it home I decided I was done storing my "wanabre" shell for my best friend.  Since I borrowed his trailer it was easy for me to unload my new addition and load his shell back on it.  I returned his trailer and got rid of the shell at the same time. 😁

Once thing I did not even think about until I got the car home is the license plate.  For those in California you know that in 1970 California went to blue and yellow so that meant a 1969 model year car would've had to been purchased IN 1969 to receive black and yellow plates.  This car STILL wears it's original plates and something that is SO AWESOME is the original plates wear number 046 TWO YEARS before the 510 won the Trans Am Championship.  May not mean much to anyone else but I think it is so cool.  ALSO the fact that I have BOTH plates is rare in and of itself.

Since I have been busy with a 1 month old and trying to finish up the Fairlady Z this car has the back seat for now.  I did manage to source the wheels, carbs, and header and also clean up the engine bay and what a difference that made.  Also got a set of Vallejo Datsun plate frames.  This car came from Sunnyvale Datsun so if anyone has a plate frame they want to sell me please let me know.

I see what looks like a straight red 510 on the ground!!!!

seen your work. this car is in good hands

THANKS MAN!!

Honestly I haven't figured out what to do with the red shell yet......it is very straight except there is no floor from the back seat to the tail.....  I want to restore it because I have a clean title and it is a rare 1973 in factory bright green and still wears it's rear defrost window and I have the lighted switches.  Furthermore the VIN# would register #8 newest on the 510Realm list....

It may be too far gone but I haven't given up yet lol

I haven't been able to do much to this car yet but now that the Fairlady is driveable I can use the garage.  First step was to test fit my libre's so I can take them apart for powdercoating:

skinny vs fat:

SO...............after 8 months of ownership and my new job I FINALLY had some time to work on this car.  My work was shut down for 2 weeks for the holidays and I also had been working with a friend to acquire his setup.  My friend Red owns the graffiti 510 and had been wanting to change up the drivetrain and talked of doing a rotary swap or an S2000 swap forever.  I had always told him to let me know if and when he wanted to sell his L-series.  As you all know I am and L-series fan.  Anyways about 2 months ago he came up with a number which I felt was fair but there was NO way I could afford to buy it until at least a year.........due to still having my other project cars getting worked on.

The saturday before Christmas I went on a fun run with friends and stopped by Tyler's house to check out his new Bride replica seats as I had always wanted a set but didn't think I'd fit.  While there he pointed out a 13b turbo rotary his friend was selling so I had a thought.  After a few conversations with Red and Spencer (seller of the motor) I struck a deal to trade Red the rotary setup and a set of wheels and some other parts for his L-series!!!

Tyler hooked me up and the day after Christmas he delivered the engine to Red and hauled Red's setup to my house.

I ended up getting everything from the radiator to the rear end including the fuel pump.  I wasted no time disassembling and cleaning and painting the motor.  My thought was to combine parts that I already had (header, radiator, water inlet, manifold, motor mounts, etc) with this setup to achieve what I was going for.  I can't run the manifold unless I don't want to run a hood lol.
