Honest question.  Since that crap is lame as fuck to all parties involved, why are they made to do it.  Is it just stubborn pride in ritual now?  Maybe just a tool to stop away any remnant of ego to build team?  I think it's some costly stupidity.  Prove me wrong please.

The same question can be posed for the entire royal family. England's identity is in large part based on it's passed glory as an expansionist empire. The royal family, their palace, and the queens guards displayed out front are empty symbols of a once great Britain. As hollow as that showmanship is, that imagery has an undeniable PR weight to it. Although the power differential is night and day, dinner at the White House is nothing compared to dining at Buckingham Palace with the queen. The guards may be  lame as fuck to all parties involved, but they are an important public face in maintaining the illusion of greatness.

The palace guards might be comprised of the finest trained fighting forces England has ever produced, but it doesn't change the fact they are dressed in antiquated theatrical costume guarding a purely symbolic figure with no modern political or military significance. It's an impressive bit of very costly PR imagery. The Royals cost Brits £350 Million a year, and £100 mil of that is for security. Those ridiculous hats don't come cheep.

The guards might have real bullets, but these folks are just for show.
