I put a ruler in the snow on the block fence in the back yard and it showed 6.5" and it kept snowing for another 2 hours.

And that pic is only after 2 passes with the plow....maybe 3.

We only got about 1.5 inches and DIA got .5. My friend who lives near Monument got 5 so I guess most of the storm was south of us.

Some history on the International Harvester posted above...

"The first International Harvester was a surplus B-23 Dragon, acquired by the newly formed IH Aviation Department in 1948. Put up for disposal at McKellar Field, Tennessee B-23 / UC-67 USAAF serial 39-30 first went to Pan Am as NR49892 then to IH as NC49892. General Tire & Rubber Co purchased the Dragon in 1952 as N1G. The B-23 drops off the FAA registry in Jan 1964. It does not appear this airframe survived the scrap yard. Note this may have been NR48909 briefly with Pan Am and is not B-23 39-47 that may have also been N1G with General Tire."

Heard they were moving and or ending the Reno show? An acquaintance of mine was talking about it to the New Mexico Aviation Division but that went nowhere. And then, a couple weeks ago I saw a story on the local news about it possibly moving to southern New Mexico. Maybe Roswell but I'm not sure.

A story:

As recent as back in the 70's, people were allowed to RV out in the field, especially at the pylon.

They continuously shut down all the good vantage points (where you might get a buzz job) including 4 miles out Red Rock Road where you could hang out at the cattle fence that outlined the course perimeter.

I went to the air races since 1986.  I had a dear friend from PA that moved to Carson City NV and I visited him every year for 2-3 weeks (yes, I was 3.5 hours from Burning Man but never went - I think that was a big mistake.)

Towards the end of my pilgrimage, the discovery of RRR was a transcend since it was now exciting to watch.

After 2-3 years of good times there, I went the next year and the entire area was militarized:

*) Cop car and police stationed there

*) 6' cyclone fence with razor wire obscuring sight

*) Race official in jeep stationed there inside the fence

*) New Dead Line for pilots:  if you cross on Monday, Warning.  If you cross on Tuesday, Disqualification (maybe they gave you to Wed but you get the idea.  The race officially opens on Thursday)

I turned around, went "home", told my friend I was never going back.

The next morning, he's waking me up saying something about planes hitting building or something....  it didn't make any sense as I was coming out of sleep.

Yep, it was 911.

The races were cancelled but I went back the next Monday when the grounding was lifted and had some interesting conversations as well as seeing some activity.

Then there was the horrific crash into the VIP seats.

After that I decided for old times sake to back to RRR only to find that the actual town of RR which is laid out parallel to the course property was blocked off - something like 2 blocks.  I talked to some people and there was a guy who had a home right on the edge of the course property that welcomed anyone that wanted to watch from his place.

I also talked to a long time photographer that said since the 70's, people went out on the course property, dug foxholes and laid up there until the races started.  This fellow even found a property owner that had acerage out on the course, approached him to lease the property for a week during the races because while off limits, race officials/police could not make people leave their property.  So he set up there to watch the races with all his paperwork to fend off the police/officials.

That's some pretty hard core stuff, but that's the way I am - I'll do anything for a thrill.  My other 2 life experiences was at the 1st F1 @ Detroit where I snuck into a high rise parking garage and was watching 150 mph F1 cars from about 10' away - I could feel their heat and smell.  The other was working at Pratt & Whitney, the Thunderbirds flew in a day early since P&W had a strip and on the day before their demonstration at Moroso, they did a practice for their buddies at P&W where the flagpole in front of the massive manufacturing/engineering build was show center.  And there were no altitude restrictions so we're talking low baby!  I was at that flag pole.  When they do that airalon roll, when they are max nose down, the plane nose was on my nose - at that moment he is moving right at me (!)  I could have gotten on the roof of the plant but I would have missed 90% of the show. But at the end, they all formed up and came broadside over the plant as low as possible.  There were guys watching from scaffolding on the roof and they dropped flat they came in so low.  Wow.  Maybe best buzz job ever.  I always think about what that must have been like.

Other than that, Datsuns and Life Sucks Balls.

PS.  my friend passed away a few years ago and I haven't been back there.  He was a member of the EAA and for years we would help out manning gates at the show - we got a free pass for the event, something like a $150 value.  So that was cool.  But those pylon officials are asshole pricks and think they own the place.  They dissed us every time we crossed paths.  They never offered any EAA folk an invite to help out with pylon work.  We were little people.  Ironically I was there on a Monday late in my tenure and I heard they didn't have enough people.  So I ran them down offering, but they had filled.  But they put me on The List.  I would have made it to a pylon but my friend died and NV was all over for me.

Did I mention Life Sucks Balls?

Anyone interested in my Reno Air Race merch from past years?  T-shirts, sweat shirts, and a variety of coffee mugs.

I have an autographed copy of Boyington's book when he was there.

And I have some pictures that my Dad took in the '70's,as well as a

"PRESS PASS"  if someone's interested.

Found a Lyle Shelton Rare Bear autographed T-shirt.

I went to the 1986 air races the 1st time - it was the 2nd week of a 2-week vacation on the West coast:  1 week at Seattle & Mt. St. Helens, and then 1 week at the air races.
I got to see a SR-71 flyby there too.

I believe I shot over 50 rolls of 35mm, approximately 1500 photos.

LOL I was at COSTCO, got a platform cart and was putting all my rolls in the processing envelopes.  People kept stopping to ask if I had their prints thinking I worked there.  That was so cool.

Camera was a Mamiya Auto XTL which had terrible focusing because of heavy grease - by buddy had Nikons all the way from F1's and the light grease in those lenses allowed you to achieve laser-like focus.  More than half the shots are not quite focused - some really great shots, but not sharp enough.  I doubt if I'll have the time, but a lot of people are claiming AI sharpening actually works.  If I could recover 20% of those pics, it would be incredible.

Have lots of aviation pics including shot from the roof at Pratt & Whitney open house festival.

It's so funny, at any long event, I start off 100% aircraft and then as the event drags on, I start taking pics of the pretty girls.

I've taken lots of pics that should not end up in the landfill after I'm gone, but 1000 years from now, everything will be long gone.  Perhaps a "Dissolution Ceremony" should be performed like the Tibetan monks - I think burning like flags.
