Inverted engine? FAA number under rudder?

That is a pretty good guess. The original engine, the DB605 is an inverted V-12. This one is sporting a regular "upright" american Allison V-12. The airframe is a Spanish Built Buchon that originally came with a Roll Royce Merlin.

This one has a custom exhaust system to make it appear like the original engine setup.

Before the engine swap. They also changed the tail and canopy to reflect the proper model it is representing.

Privateer anti sub mission.  My son-in-law said they were death traps!  When he left the navy [P3 Orion was his ride] he was offered a very high priced civilian "research organization" contract to be crew chief on an ex Navy aircraft.  As soon as he found out the plane was a Privateer he walked away.
