HOGIE
I'm starting this thread for people to talk about the different alternator modifications, or just other than stock alternators, they have ran on their dattos to get more juice. I want to do something along these lines and I want to know what has been done, what works and what doesn't. Essentially, I want something better than a rebuilt Hitachi. Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
FYI...The Saturn alternator is huge! Too much work to fit. Easier solutions are out there. 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Is there a write up on how to fit a 90 amp Hitachi? Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
On my 74 620 im using a Internally regulated Alt off an 81 510. 50 amp output..had to buy a different size belt & snip 2 wires off the voltage regulator & connect those on the back of the Alt. Hainz has a pic / diagram of what wires to snip. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
On my '78 I ran a Plymouth K car 90 amp unit. I asked the wrecking yard what 90 amp alternator was never asked for as a replacement and they said the Chrysler ones ... $20 and you take it out. (perfect! they are not a high demand unit) Had to slice a chunk off one of the mounting arms and add that thickness in washers to the other to slide it sideways to line up the belt. The 620 pulley bolted right on. Turns out I was half done before finding out it has an external electronic regulator buried in the EFI / MAF sensor wiring. Pulled a fender mounted one from an old Dodge truck and wired in and it works well. The headlights have a slight pulse in brightness. Cost was $20 and a couple of hours work. Works perfectly, has at least 6K miles on it. Only down side is the very slight pulsing. On my 710 sedan I used an internal regulated KA24E 90 amp from an S13. Stock 710 Vee pulley swaps on but needs shims or will rub the alternator case. Modified the block mount so the Alt. could swing properly for adjustment. Used the stock belt and I had to convert the two wires to change from external regulator. This causes the later choke heater relay to be energized so it has to be unplugged and the choke heater wire at the carb spliced into the idle cut wire for a new power supply. On my 710 goon I used an '02 Altima 100 amp alternator. Stock pulley was used but had to shim it as before but this reduces the number of threads for the nut holding it on. The bolt has a shoulder on it and and would only allow 3-4 threads to screw on. I got another larger nut and cranked it on with an impact wrench to get the maximum threads on to hold it. Still wasn't sure so I MIG'ed a very small tack weld inside. Again, had to convert the two wires, remove the choke heater by unplugging and splice the heater wire to the idle cut wire. 1 Quote Link to comment
AtomChurch
7127-1 saturn(GM) 90 alternator. If you flip it upside down and wire the bat post to pin 2 you have a working bolt in alternator. Though it fits much better if you heat the upper mounting bracket with a torch and bend it out towards the rad about 3/4". You have to flip it upside down to make it bolt in. Zero issues on the many L motors I had it installed on. More then 100k miles and never had one fail for any reason other the covering and filling it with water one time while it was working.... HOGIE
Will someone change the name to 'Pics of your alternator mods'. It will make it more interesting. Clearly my alternator sucks and no one wants to see that. Quote Link to comment

metalmonkey47
1990 Maxima alternator. Almost a perfect fit, 90 amp, 2 wire regulator, internal fan, almost the same pulley diameter (you'll have to swap pulleys) and its far cheaper then a saturn alt with the same output. *These pictures are next to a 60 amp 240Z alternator* 1 Quote Link to comment

HOGIE
I have the ka24e hard body alternator in my 620, 90amp. It already has the v pulley and bolts right in, only need a plug and to jump some wires. I was just looking at Rock Auto and they have the 1990 D-21 alternator listed as having 70 Amp. Is there a specific year/model engine where they started using the 90 Amp. alternator? Quote Link to comment
