Alright captain.

So..... gotta say after you're mentioning you're going to MS-2 your L28et setup ...

I got all excited again about Mega-squirt in general and started reading again late through the night... probably spent some hours-ish total over the last week..

I talked to a local datsun enthusiast about MS and he explained it to me more clearly as to what you can REALLY do ( a basic idea for my limited understanding ) = cool !

If I budget appropriately I do believe I'll get MS-2 or MS-3 in the future ( depends when haha ) .... looks fairly straight forward on the DIYautotune guide , and the setup itself even if the guide wasn't there. I quite like those controller/tester board thingy's (can't remember what their called atm) ... a brilliant idea !

I'm really encourged to see how yours turns out and what parts/setup/mapping/tuning you end up going with !

Are you going to assemble a unit yourself or buy it assembled ?

Keep on keeping on !

Thanks man

Actually I already have an MS1 which is assembled, I also have the Relay board and the relay board harness and the master wiring harness. Pics on the first page.

If I was going to buy it again, I would buy the MS2 or 3 if I had the money. But the MS1 is an awesome trade off for the price, you get so much tune ability for so little price. It honestly surprises me how many people keep the stock ECU or VG30 ECU on the L28ET considering how much power you can make with a good MS tune, and then theres the reliability...

There is A LOT to Megasquirt, but once you get through the technical stuff, its really an awesome system, I am not speaking from experience myself since I have never hooked mine up to test it, but I see what other people have done with it and its really impressive what it can do for how simple it is.

Once I get the car back up to snuff, and the radiator fixed, MegaSquirt will be the next project.

Then the L28ET.

For the people that already have the Z31 ECU isn't so bad the copper zxt that DTP has now has one that came with the engine when I swapped it in it works well when done right then if you wanna tune there's NisTune but that's like $400 don't know how much MS1 is but I've ready a lot on it in the past it's worked well with everyone that has it.

It does honestly work really really well once its hooked up right. Nistune ends up being as you said about $400, they come put fairly equal if you wanna go stock and then upgrade. But I felt like just doing it as a whole package and getting it tuned all at once. I also didnt get my engine with a ECU or harness, the harness was totally destroyed and the ECU was gone.

On a side note, it seems that the Maxima has a special sized steering  shaft, a 240sx adapter doesnt fit, and I am afraid that a 510 adapter or a 280zx adapter might not fit either. MOMO lists 4 different part numbers for old datsun sterering adapters. Luckily I did find one that is specifically for my car, it seems the #3506 fits.

Should be here next week.

This kind of sux though, because it means that nobody makes a short hub. I realize of course the MOMO is safer though.

Not special, just old. 240SX uses the bigger shaft, like everything from the 90s. 70s and 80s used a slightly smaller shaft.

I'd bet money it does...   B)

Everything from the 70s (except a 1200/B210) up to the mid-80s uses the same size shaft. The only reason most companies list two different parts is because the turn signal cancelling pins in the back are vertical on some and horizontal on others. Nothing a drill can't fix.

At one time or another, I had the same Personal wheel/hub in my Maxima, my 280Z, and one of my 510s.

Drat ! That's right you have MS-1 opps... All good either way and still just as excited to see it setup/tuned.

I like the idea of being able to transfer from one car to the next even though I probably will never really do it haha.

Relay board + relay harness + master harness indeed good choices.

The "stimulator" was the tech term I was looking for earlier lol.

Right I get where you're coming from !!!

It seems like it's a GREAT system  ... I'm really excited about it .... talking to various people including Arche about these different systems really gives a lot of hope to our L6's ... muahahahaha

lol ... also .... I have both the z31 ecm , and the 280zx ecm ... for now the stock zxt ecm is cheap to hookup or transfer to project car cuz I'm cheap ... in some areas lolol

Down the line I'd like to end up with megasquirt 1 or 2 .... and/or z31 ecm stuffs with nistune if need be !!!

But I have like (5) z-cars at the moment ... soooo ..... $#$% budget really....  ..... if only I had 1 or 2 it would probably be pretty nice by now with MS or Z31

Keep it up....

what's up with the radiator ?

It's nice to see interior work being done ... I've done much of it myself really as I'm never done with the rest of the car .... ...... and cuz slob .... true story bro's

Oh yeah I like the z31 ecu + etc  I have in the copper for sure it's a keeper... .

I'll look at nistune some more .... both of these systems have me rallied up.....  :hyper:

I dont have nearly as much experience with Nistune as I would like, But I hear its pretty awesome.

UGH MY RADIATOR!!!!!!!!!, I am not sure on that yet, I think I am gonna get one of these, It should be able to bolt in after drilling holes in the mount tab.

Any suggestions or experiences are appreciated.

WOW, REALLY??? That is good to know cause that would mean that you are right on the steering shaft.

The MOMO is pretty cheap for a hub though, I mean the cheap chinese made one was $31 already so I just spent the extra, its really good to know though that it might fit other cars. I had a feeling the different models might have something to do with the turn signals. and not the spline.

I tried my S13 hub once on one of my 510s (you can get an all-in-one quick release/hub for an S13 but not a 510), but it was maybe a 2-3mm bigger hole than the 510 shaft. Does that sound like what you saw?

After working on what seems like a billion Datsuns/Nissans I've only ever seen the 3 sizes, small (1200/B210), medium (everything from 70-88 or so), and large (almost everything from 89-up).

There's probably some changes in the cars from the late 90s on (thanks to air bags), but I don't mess with those much.

Actually I found the opposite, the shaft was substantially bigger than the hole on the 240sx adapter, by probably near a 6mm.

Updates on the dash.

Got everything installed, and all is right and working correctly, after only some light fiddling with wiring.

Need MisterFreezys damn glove box now!!, he has my color and I have his.

I installed the rear door cards as well. I need some seat covers until I can find some useable sporty seats that dont suck.

IMG_2802_zps419bbbd6.jpg

I havent installed the front cards yet, Ill get into why a bit later.......

Once the dash was in, I started up the car, which has been sitting since May with gas from April. Barely turned a full revolution and fired up to life idling along.

I am gonna just drain the old gas and fill er up with mid grade and call it a day.

Happy New Year Cap - and everyone!

The interior is looking great!

I've not had a good experience with "some" aftermarket steering wheel adapters.  I acquired an adapter from Grant for my 910 which fit the spine but could not get the horn button to work at all!   I wasn't gonna spend alot of time machining stuff when it should work as is!

I took my steering wheel out as I had mentioned in a previous post and installed a 1977 Datsun 810 wheel - perfect fit and works perfectly!

Happy new year!.

It seems that the MOMO hub is not available now. So I will either be using a taiwan hub, or I will be ditching the aftermarket wheel and going with an OEM wheel from another datsun.

Progress is slow now, I got the glove box painted and put back in, but I am out of money for the time being so I cant get a new radiator, or get her registered at the moment, which totally sucks,

You should be able to use an ST wheel hub from a ST 720 it has the same mounting holes as the momo. I might have an extra one somewhere.

I HATE that this project is sitting right now. it starts, runs, the interior is mostly done, and its all fucking beautiful inside.

But I need to weld the front doors,

Ahhh, the 80's, a time when electric window motors..., were so damn big and heavy, that THEY BROKE THE INNER DOOR FRAME IN HALF!!!

look at this craziness, I need it fixed before I can put the front door cards on. I also need to fix the faulty inner handle.

Other than that I think I am just gonna get some seat covers and call it a day. I need Toyota Paseo seats, they have the exact look I am going for (Recaro Specialist M, but cant afford $1300 seats that cost as much as another maxima)

So January is the month of Stand-alones, I got my Hondata Kpro this month for my Civic, and now I have started messing with my Megasquirt, which is making me greatly excited to install it.

I did a job for a friend which netted me a great laptop to use for tuning and service manuals, mostly garage work in general and it has proved to be highly useful. I now have all my tuning programs installed on it for both cars, TunerStudio for the  Maxima's MS, and Kmanager for the Honda.

I bought the MS unit 4 years ago and in that time have learned only a little info, most of which mostly in the last year. I bought it from someone who decided to go a different direction with their ECU. The guy had bought a pre-assembled kit, with wiring harness, and relay board and relay harness. I paid like $240 for it all or something like that, which is a steal since the combined price of all this equipment is around $530 before shipping.

So that said, I had bought it and sat on the whole unit occasionally collecting a few other bits and pieces here and there when I could, sensors and whatnot. But I had never tried the unit out, not once in the last 4 years, so being that I bought it on CL, it was completely up in the air whether it worked or not!

But today I got to reading, got out some schematics and looked into some things. Then I got my courage and curiosity bot up at the same time and hooked the relay board up to a 12V source. I plugged the harness into the MS box and installed the necessary drivers on my tuning laptop. then I plugged the MS into my laptop, and turned on the 12V source. Much to my surprise, the laptop immediately recognized the MS, and so did Tuner Studio. I was able to get the displays up and see the dashboard, which displayed all the sensor readouts, including the only sensor hooked up, the onboard MAP sensor, so I hooked a tube up to it, sucked on it, and guess what, the damn thing showed a reading, MY MEGASQUIRT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also got it to read my 240sx TPS sensor correctly and fire the fuel pump when it turns on. I am excited about this, but its gonna b a few months. I gotta get the car on the road first, which means a new radiator and registration blah blah blah.

I am gonna to adapt the MS stuff so when I am ready to do it, I can just nearly bolt it in and start tuning.
