Australian goon makeover

Recommended Posts

My build is full of rust and hard manual labor so when I follow builds like this it helps me to remember that it can be done and that rust is only temporary...

Just a little motivational thing i guess.

Time to stop trolling the classifieds thread for five minutes and do some work on the Goon.

Plan with the chassis is to basically join the front and rear rails with a piece of box section.

Dug through the scar pile and found the piece(s) I need.

Quick measure up and feasibility check against a spare front cut I have.

The idea will to be section out the ends and overlap the front and rear rails.

Dug out a coil over kit from one of the treasure stashes.

Not sure if this kit will work with these shocks. Specifically the OD on the dust cover is a little too big.

Might have to think of some other grand plan.

Sooooooooooo, bracket welds on the underside ground out, couple of taps with the FBH, and I'm wondering why they won't come out?

Turns out they are also spot welded onto the floor pan!

Silly me, anyway, problem solved and onwards and upwards.

Hmmmmmm, not a lot done since the previous update,

Most of the superfluous brackets and other "stuff" are now gone from the rear of the Goon.

5.1 ratio locked diff (woohoo) dug out!

Work progressing (slowly).

5.1? Thats some pretty crazy gearing... Are you swapping ratios or using them as is?

Hell no!

5.1 makes for some awesome wheel spinning!

For what I've got planned for the goon (hill climbs) this diff, coupled with the 5 speed gearbox is the ideal ratio.

Top speed with this gearing will be around the 90 to 100 mph range (140 to 160 kph) roughly.

Great ratio for quick acceleration in short, sharp turns etc

Hmmm. I need to start learning my gearing and such... keeping this auto means I have to maximize each component of my driveline to make sure Im getting the most out of the setup. Ive already got a couple things planned, but the exact rear ratio has never been nailed down yet.

Guess I better head over to The Realm and do some reading.

Shheeeeiit Tristin, stay away from the Realm.

You'll be sipping soy lattes, wearing a cravat, and Being nice to everyone if you start inhabiting there.

Gotta say though, for Minty with the auto tragic transmission, a 5.1 ratio diff would be pretty cool!

Im just a lurker over there... also like to stalk the Classifieds :D

Yeah, with my planned driving style of slow city driving, I figured a torquey engine with a higher-end ratio would suite me well. Im not a speed demon and as long as I can reach freeway speeds Im happy.

I wonder if I can swap hears to create the ultimate 5.1 LSD :sneaky:

Sooooooo, after yesterday's aborted attempt to do some work on the Goon, got home from work today and thought I'd do a little bit more.

Did a bit of searching again (community yo) on others who've done the IRS conversion on the 510 goon. Now having removed all the superfluous brackets from underneath, I've decided to do the first cut on the floor pan for the clearance of the IRS.

Having tried to make sure I leave as much of the support rails underneath, this has been the first cut.

Aw shucks, im all embarresed.

Roll cage (half cage) mock up starts this afternoon.

Plan is to tie the rear suspension into the roll cage so before I go too far with cutting out more bits to fit the IRS I want to start measuring up mounting points, cage arm angles, additional strengthening and plates etc.  Rear coilovers will mount throught the wheel arches onto the cage.

Cage (back half) not dissimilar to the one I built for my project race car.

Bit of work tonight.

Big thing with the way I like to build my cages is, it all ties off the main hoop, so, main hoop sort of roughly in place.

Next step for me is to drill holes in the floor and insert the main hoop.

After this, bring the hoop to roughly where it's going to be, and, start mapping out some of the many stays and cross braces.

Theres way much more plating, tube work, and tagging to come !

Little bit of head scratching and mockup work today.

Tie in point for the hoop to the central pillar idea here.....

Previously, with other cages I've built, I've also tied the hoop to the transmission tunnel.....

Thanks, I've had similar ideas.

I'm only doing a half cage for the goon this time.

I'm guessing the triangulation on the centre of the shock tower bar ties into the floor on the factory support rail?

I really need to start on mocking up the fitting points for the cross member before I go too much further with the cage mock up at this stage.
