Rustina 510
Tacked the trunk and floor pans down, just need a pro like izzo to come and finish it off. I think I might try to weld up the fenders I cut, that way I can start binding the fenders and getting som bondo laid down Quote Link to comment
izzo
I am no pro  I did 6 months of welding at the merts campus in astoria, 8 hours a day. Had to start on oxy, learn how to do butt welds, corners, vertical (not easy), took about 2 weeks of that, then did the rest on stick welding. Been doing some wire feed at home, its not too hard really. Just more keeping the welds far apart to not have any warping. Nothing like the sound of welding, mmmmm... like fryin bacon :D Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
True, can you make it over today? Quote Link to comment

Rustina 510
Dam. I need this shit welded up. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Tried welding all weekend and I'm not doing well with it. Didn't get much done this weekend. Might start on the engine bay after work today sense I'm not good enough to weld anything on the car. Quote Link to comment
izzo
Im at the airport on my cell. Take extra body tin u have and practice on that. First you make your tack welds every two inches. Then start welding one inch in random spots cooling with water every time to avoid warping if your worried. Practice on spaare body tin first. Should not make popping sounds. If so somethings wrong. Should sound like frying bacon. Weld with the gun at a 45 degree angle so when you weld you can see the puddle. Make sure before you weld the surface is clean. Don't hold the tip to close. Move at a steady pace. One you weld and it penetrate right you will see heat marks to the sides of the bead about half inch or so each side. You work memorial day weekend? I can prolly sneak down for a day that weekend. Prolly Saturday Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Next time you can make it I will be certain to make sure I'll be here or my cousin Ian who has been helping me Quote Link to comment

What wire size? Quote Link to comment
Jester
.023 for body work. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
I'm using .030 Quote Link to comment
Jester
It may not seem like a huge difference, but, .023 is the way to go for body work. You don't need the added heat it takes to run the .030 wire effectively. 030 is good for thicker material like 10g (or 1/8") or so where the heat won't warp it. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Ok, I need some tips for the welder too so I'll just go get all I need and keep practicing. I don't think I'll be ready to weld by the time izzo shows up but I am going to keep at it, I don't like not knowing how to do stuff that needs to be done on my car Quote Link to comment
Jester
Check your feed rollers too, to make sure they are up to running such a small wire. Some have two different sizes of groves on them. They should have the size right on the side of them. I am assuming you are using a small 110V welder. It may help it to run a little better if you plug it into a 20amp plug. Try the one for your washing machine. That is what I use for mine. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Yeah 110v hf mig, no grooves on the wheels for diff size wire. It will work it's adjustable. Having my first ever work ferlo tomorrow so I'm thinking about practicing some welding as much as I can. I'll get this shit down. Quote Link to comment
izzo
the smaller wire would be better, but i haven't seen the smaller wire with flux. just like .035, which is what i have, and .030. If you run the .030 get the right size tips. I haven't seen any smaller wire with flux. if they dont make it and you want to run it you will have to get a gas setup on the welder... 2lb spool of wire is like 15 bux 10lb spool is around 50-60 tips are 8-12 bux for a pack of 4 to 8 depending where you go. Adding a gas setup to your welding, hundreds.. The kit cost around 100 dollars, not sure about the bottle. and if your kit doesn't come with a whip then you need to get one of those too (on the cheap side...) Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Wow slow down turbo, I don't think I'm ready for gas and all that, I'm just working on keeping a bead going and not screwing everything up. Still think next weekend izzo? Quote Link to comment
izzo
Not this coming one, but the following one i got off, and no kids. Im on call for work, but im going to talk to the boss and tell him i need to wander towards portland. You dont have to get a gas setup, i was just putting info on the .23 wire... Heat is an issue, not the big weld. Big beads can be ground down at your leisure. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Yeah I had the wire feed speed way to high my first weekend and made some major puddles that I need to grind down, I don't know what I was thinking just jumping into it like that but I can grind it off. At least it was in the trunk, I practices all day yesterday and im getting better. But I would still appreciate your exp and help. Thx dude Quote Link to comment
izzo
Dood. Just a heads up -- I just got back from vegas. Dont take coupons from anyone, they will give you tons of free shit, food, shows, 200 bux in chips to gamble, blah blah. Then they will want you to goto a time share thing for 3 hours. Don't do it! They will be all over the place trying to hand this stuff out, just ignore them and keep walking. At night time, there will be guys flicking cards, dont get those either. They are "escort cards" ollz.. They hand out cards for hookers there, how nice  I took a few of them and lol'd. Wife didn't find it funny. (so i collected more, im up to about 40) Maybe if you are brave, you can get some cards too and when you get back we can trade em like baseball cards! Welding - Yeah you can def tell when you have it setup to high. When you are welding the wire will shoot out and hit the metal and you can feel it kind of jumping. Sometimes the puddle gets big just from the thickness of the wire, or moving to slow, or other variations. like jester was saying or implying, the smaller wire is more ideal, but use what you got. ratsun ftw Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Lol I guess Vegas hasn't changed much sense the last time I was their then. Yeah I slowed down the wire feed and I'm getting better, I need a mask that sits on my head, all I have is a hand held face mask. I was getting frustrated but now it's starting to get better so it's ok, maybe next weekend I'll weld the fenders while you do the pans."the fender welds will be covered by the box flares so you won't be able to see the ugly welds ;) " Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
Yes a helmet would probably help alot i try to use both hands one on trigger and one as far down the neck as possible. I only use .023 it welds SO much easier on light gauge. My friend uses flux core wire to weld everything. And maybe in the to much information file but.. I have gas Quote Link to comment
izzo
Rustina, that was my first time to vegas (or on vacation, ever) So it was quite the adventure  Yeah a helmet is awesome. I have one, but i just broke the f'ing thing. The deal that tightens up broke. So i just have the hand held one (or i could tape the mask one to get me by) Its nice having your second arm to balance yourself on to get a nice straight bead. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
I bet, I'm going to hf fir some tips and a mask tomorrow. I don't buy wire their though it sucks from what a few people tOld me Quote Link to comment
