71DIMER
Well after seeing everyone's project threads (and Pac Coast Datsun telling me to create my own project thread) I decided to finally post some pics of what I've done. I surely haven't been doing any major rework like some of you guys but I've been doing a little here & there trying to clean it up one small project at a time. I know how we all LOVE pictures instead of a million words so here are some pictures (sorry for it being too many) of the different things I've done so far... INTERIOR How it looked when I bought it...gotta love those Ratty seats..lol! Interior Removed Carpeting/Padding: I always hated how ugly the black paint (?) to white paint transition was... Old Front Carpet (Used it as new carpet template): I didn't have a template for the the carpet going directly under the seats so I measured and cut it carefully. Carpet Front Test Fit, you can see how I cut strips to make sure it would fit nice before cutting them to size. Here are both pieces test fit, hard to see the seam :) Rubberized Under Coating after cleaning up cabin floor: I wanted a straight clean line for the undercoating/paint transition. I decided to use outdoor carpet double sided tape cut in about 6" strips strategically placed to hold down carpet instead of spray adhesive. Easier to remove the tape than to get spray adhesive out if needed. Here is how the carpet rests over the rubberized undercoating Decided that the belt buckles also needed some attention since they were beat to hell like the rest of the interior... Seats Installed, with some new carpet floormats. I decided I like the gray contrast instead of going all black inside...what do you think? Also you'll notice my handy work on the belt buckles too :P Here you can catch a glimpse of the shift boot cover that I sprayed flat black Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Awesome transformation my friend! Bet it sounds alot quieter in the cab now too. Quote Link to comment
71DIMER
Ok fellas if you guys aren't bored to tears yet, here is part II (can't post more than 30 pics in one posting :P) EXTERIOR I decided I was tired of looking at all the surface rust so I got off my duff and sanded, masked, and primered away. Here you can see the progress of the top of the bed rail. It had surface rust just like the side of the bed. Bed Hooks Rusty/Sanded/Primered: Damn things took the longest to get clean because of the contours of the hooks themselves. Grille/Bezels Before/During/After: I didn't think the stock grille had a chance of looking good so I bought another one from ebay that was in great shape but decided to give it a go anyway. I think they came out pretty damn good compared to what it looked like at the beginning! Paint Chemically Stripped Primered Painted Silver Closeups of the grille and bezels painted silver...not too shabby! BEDLINER: I had a kit of Herculiner laying around for a while so I finally got busy using it. I didn't take any prep pics but here's the after...I'm real happy with it. Easy to go on and it feels hard as hell...heck I have already scraped my skin off on it! ENGINE BAY Here are a series of before/during/after of my tired old engine bay. You can see how it looked like when I first got it, and after being tired of seeing it all gross I simple greened the hell out of it, masked it all off, primered, and painted it white. Nice and clean huh? LOL! Passenger Side: Drivers Side: Engine Bay: Primered Quote Link to comment
71DIMER
Alright here is part 3 showing some more fun fun fun I've had. :) VALVE COVER With the engine bay cleaned up and painted, I figured it was time to give the tired old valve cover the same treatment...what do you guys think? I had to keep the red stripe theme going so.... Fresh off the engine. Wire Brush Wheeled Simple Green Begin the painting process ENGINE HEAD/BLOCK Head/Block Simple Greened (and lots of elbow grease). Head came out like new but the block wasn't as cooperative!! :( Relays/Brackets Before/During/After I decided to clean up these little items...here's what they looked like. So after all that elbow great here are some final engine bay pictures Engine Bay: After MISC: Here are some little things I did to catch some more details... Shift Boot: Last but not least I had to revive the red stripes that originally caught my eye: I have to clean up the overspray but here they are. Rear/Front Ok fellas that's all for now, but we all know Datsun projects are never ending so stay tunred for more. What do you guys think so far? Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Big improvements all around! Rubbing compound will get that overspray off ;) Quote Link to comment

71DIMER
Thanks Fineline, I am considering doing the stripes on the top of the cabin too...still haven't decided to but leaning toward it. Hey how are my old Titan wheels doing? I think you have them now (I think you traded the guy who bought them from me to trade with you for your wheels). :) Quote Link to comment
Fineline
Oh your the guy?;) There great. Theres a pic of my truck on here somewhere with them on it. Man were finding more and more guys in the bay area on here. Were all going to have to get together again soon! I vote for the stripe on the roof! Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Second the stripe on the roof. Thanks for the pic's inspiring to say the least. Any pic's of the hood stripes before? Quote Link to comment
71DIMER
Sure here's a pic of the front stipes when I first got them... And here it is in the background :) And Fineline, here are some pics of the Titans when I had them... Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Stripe that roof! Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
Very nice!! Proof you don't need to completely tear a rig down to make it look nice. Great reminder for me :) Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Wish I would have thought of that.... looks at truck parts scattered around garage scratching head... :S Quote Link to comment
69FJWagon
WOW I am so glad you didnt sell that thing to us you made it look great I love that you are keeping the strips I was thinking of doing a set of black strips on Lisas' truck to match??? we need to get together soon :D Quote Link to comment
mklotz70
for masking all those odd shaped parts.....aluminum foil works great. Quote Link to comment
71DIMER
Thought of what ]2eDeYe? 2eDeYe;28753'']Wish I would have thought of that.... looks at truck parts scattered around garage scratching head... :S Hey Clayton, I figured I might as well clean it up since I already had most of the things I needed for it already at my place. The Herculiner was the most expensive part I've put into it and I was happy how easy that went on and please with the results. I'm considering using that to line the inside of my 510's trunk and possibly the under side of the hood if I'm feeling adventerous. But I'm still way jealous of how clean and in good shape Lisa's rig is in...:) Adding subtle stripes to her truck would look great I think! I was thinking of doing the stripes in flat red to keep it looking the same as it did before but went with the gloss red...still can switch to flat red but I'm not sure if I want to change it all over yet. Yeah we should get together soon...maybe you can help me install my matchbox dizzy or adjust my brakes? :P...bring ur tools! Ha ha ha :P. MKlotz...now you tell me about the aluminum foil trick! Doh! I could have used that when masking the individual brake fluid lines next to the MC...that was a bitch! Quote Link to comment
Edz280zx
Truck looks awesome...great motivation! The dime is pretty slick too. Quote Link to comment
qship510
Hey, still got those ratty seats? Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Thought of not doing a complete teardown...mostly kidding because the truck I started with was a RUST BUCKET.... It's sorta daunting looking at all the parts stacked up, but it'll be back together someday and better than new :D Quote Link to comment
71DIMER
Truck looks awesome...great motivation! The dime is pretty slick too. Thanks Edz280zx...510's are in my blood. Literally...I've busted my knuckles many a times working on my first one when I was 15 trying to get it back on the road a few times...lol. qship510: Sorry man, those seats were tossed as soon as I replaced them with the 1999 Civic seats. They're easy to swap in too...this is how I did that. Quote Link to comment
pl521sss
Thought of what ]2eDeYe? Yeah we should get together soon...maybe you can help me install my matchbox dizzy or adjust my brakes? :P...bring ur tools! Ha ha ha :P. ahh, your having trouble with your brakes too. I had that issue for a while also. Mike directed me here on Ratsun to get answers. I'll loan you my Factory Datsun brake tool if you need it. :D Looking good on your truck. I'm in Fremont with Brandon and Clayton. Are you looking for wheels for that? Quote Link to comment
