So i see you have found it wasn`t the carb getting watered down ,,,but we used to cut a strip of thin roofing sheet metal the same height as filter and just sandwich it in with the top , to keep mud and rocks out. And the roundness ? of the filter gave it some stability to not just fall out... It also kinda works to keep carb from icing up ...kinda
