five1oh
So I finally have a few updates on this car. It will be headed to Utah soon to complete the metal and paintwork. In the meantime Eric has been finishing up a few things that I have wanted forever.... For those that don't know the GT and GT-X models of skyline had rain gutter trim....in order to have the trim there were notches on the rain gutter in the corners that allow you to install the trim. The GTR model did NOT have trim because that was added weight.....my goal is to make this car as close to R specification as I can so I wanted to add material there prior to paintwork. In addition I had already gifted my trim to a close friend for his restoration. Basically there was no going back............ Here is a before picture: Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr And here is the magic.....incredibly difficult work...... Soundline
Incredible. There is literally nothing I would change about the metal work here. It’s going to be an incredible GTX/GTR clone. 1 Quote Link to comment

five1oh
Alright the car has been sandblasted!!!!! As expected more rust and issues were found but now Mauricio has developed a gameplan and I am on a mission to order some more replacement sheet metal. What can't be sourced will be made from scratch. my rear wheel tubs and floor were terrible.......along with all the other issues LOL. The next updates will start to be cut out, fab, and replace. Looking forward to making progress finally. five1oh
Rust never ends with this project.....making progress though. Car is on a custom made cart and the first pieces Mauricio is tackling are the B pillar door strikers. five1oh
I received these pics in September but just uploaded them. More rust and more progress. five1oh
Mauricio has finally finished some other cars so now I am front of the line. Not much of an update but more bracing was installed to prepare them to remove the 1/4 panels to kill the rust behind them. Also passenger side 1/4 panel is nearly done with repairs... five1oh
Well Mauricio has been slowly plugging away on the car and sent me pictures of the front end mocked up. Engine bay forward is nearly complete and ready to button up. Next BIG thing to fix is firewall before he starts moving A pillar rearward. I know I am likely still a year away from paint but he sent me some spray outs he was doing because he is planning to paint some gold in areas that will be super hard to reach once things are going back together. Exciting stuff!! In other news I secured the engine that is going in the car. Separate posts and build info will be done later. 🙂 Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 3 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
I made a business trip to SLC Utah this past week and was able to visit my car and spend a few hours with Mauricio. Progress is currently slow as he is finishing up a JCCS build and finishing some older projects at his shop but there is still progress. They are currently spending only 1 day a week on my car but will ramp it back up this winter. Of course more rust is continuing to be found but they are tackling it little by little. Here is a picture dump of all the snaps I took while there. Sadly a lot of the prior work is having to be redone as it is already rusting due to not treating correctly or not cutting it all out. If you go back one thing you will notice is the passenger rear quarter panel is nearly perfectly straight now and B pillar is done. Unfortunately they will be removing the entire 1/4 panel to tackle rust behind it before they can build back up. Slow going but going.....one day.... MikeRL411
If the restoration rusts before it is finished I would not call it a good job well done, non timely repair is repair not done. Quote Link to comment

I agree completely. Very sad it happened in the past but at the new shop it is fully sealed as they do the repairs. At least now I know we will have gone all the way to the bones of the car and fixed them as we work our way out. Also treat each part before the next layer goes on to prevent future rust. Time consuming and expensive but will be worth it once done. This IS my forever car.....money pit. Quote Link to comment
