Draker
When you rebuilt it, did you turn it over by hand 720 degree's while on the stand? No binding or anything? 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
The marks are on the timing gun you should be using to dial it in. 2 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
It turned fine on the stand just turning It by hand, I don't have a timeing gun but I can't even get it to start were should the marks be? 1 Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
I'm not sure your engine is the issue if it turned over with no issues on the stand....did you make sure the flywheel isn't being stopped by an obstruction? 2 Quote Link to comment

720driver97
Every thing looked good when I put it in, I pulled the spark plugs out then it turned fine then I put them back in and it was good for awhile Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
Timing....... It's off..... Try again.... 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There are 8 plugs and easy to get them mixed up. Re-check every wire goes to the plug it's supposed to. Most distributor caps are marked. Turn the distributor counter clockwise to retard it. 2 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
Well I found the problem and fixed it as far as the timing go's I think because the spindle that drives the distributor was not in the right position 1 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
Now I'm having problems getting the carb adjusted properly it will run at high RPM but when I try to let it idle it will kind of spit and sputter gas out the top of the carb then kill quickly, any ideas on the problem here? Draker
That would do it.. but ya need a timing light. Get one for next time. 1 Quote Link to comment
DATSAN
How long did the truck sit without an Engine? With enough time, your fuel can turn into a mucky goop of turpentine. If it sat for more than 8 months, replace; Fuel tank, fuel lines, and, if you can afford it, replace the carb with a weber. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Replace fuel tank? For 8 months of sitting? Wtf? 2 Quote Link to comment
DATSAN
Replace fuel tank? For 8 months of sitting? Wtf? lol I meant to put a "1" in there somewhere. 18 months. Of course mine sat for 4 years. By then, the gas was syrup. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
I am resurrecting a 1985 720 st that sat for over 20 years. I pulled the tank and had it hot tanked at the radiator shop I have used since the 70s. I replace the fuel pump and filters. I have started and ran the truck from a gas can. The tank came back looking new. 1 Quote Link to comment

It should just be the brake light switch, it may have broken or is just too old to function now, theyre about $10 at napa. Quote Link to comment

You may just need to turn the idle speed screw up. Possibly the idle circuit is plugged or the idle cut solenoid is not connected. Listen near the carb while someone turns ignition on off on off... you should hear a soft click if the solenoid is working. Carefully remove the idle cut solenoid. It has a small spring and a loose part that can get away and be lost so be ready. Unscrew the idle mixture screw, counting the turns so it can be put back in the same setting. Same thing, it has loose parts that can get lost. Use a can of carb spray with the red straw and spray alternately into the idle cut solenoid and the idle mixture holes. Have a care, that spray will shoot out and can get in your eyes. This should disolve or flush out any clogs.. 2 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
I drained the gas but it only sat for a month or so without a engine. As for the carb I have a webber 32/36 the truck idols at around 800rpms now idols great. How would to lean of a mixture make the exhaust hot? Quote Link to comment
DATSAN
720driver97, excess fuel always allows more cooling than a lean burn. Having a lean mixture will always give you better combustion, (and horsepower,) but your engine won't put up with it forever. You'll end up burning up the pistons or the top ring because of higher friction. Quote Link to comment
