510 came out first and was actually based on the fiat 124.

The FIAT 124 and the Datsun 410 / 411 were all designed by the same house, Pinin Farina.  Very similar lines.  Until recently almost everyone who thought they knew what my 411 was called it a FIAT 124, especially all knowing insurance agent, repair and body shops.  Fortunately the good guys in Yokohama suceeded in deleting the more useless frilly details of the 410 and upgraded to the 411 series,  Now the trunk doesn't leak as much!

Some people also say they ripped off the BMW 2002 to design the Bluebird/510

I don't really see it at all.... Not to mention the 510 is an infinitely cleaner design. Oh, and faster.

If the three box shape was invented by BMW than maybe.  People who say Nissan copied BMW don't know the history behind the two cars. They were developed on two totally different design tracks starting way beck in the early 60's. From the word go, the Nissan 411 (predecessor of the 510) had a four head light, and incorporated front blinker grill.

In 1963, the BMW 1600 had two headlights and blinkers set way out on the outside corners. It wasn't until 1971 that the 2002 took on the "classic BMW" four headlight grill. The horizontal sonic line dividing the upper and lower body are also totally different. The BMW's sonic line is continuous around the hood and trunk, where the 510's ends on the sides. If I were Teruo Uchino the designer of the 510, I would be pissed to have the 510 called the pour man's BMW, because it is classic Japanese through and through.

BMW proved to the auto industry that there was a market for sports sedans and everyone has followed.

510 definitely has a better profile and cleaner look than 2002.

On the track car set up and drivers have way more to do with it than any differences from the factory

Stock I doubt the 510 was faster.

I love them both and would gladly park them side by side in my garage with a Lada and Alfa

The Volkswagen Variant was VW's designated 411 model number.  Even today if you take your or my Datsun PL411 or RL411 Datsun to a dealer, when they key in the model number it comes up a VW 411 Variant model.  Forgot to bitch about this to the NISSAN USA reps at yesterday's JCCS meet!  I have to log in as a 1967 Sentra to get the software to accept me as a legitamate [yeah] vehicle.

I always wanted to put a Porsche 6 under the rear of a 2 dr 411.

Extreme front end float, like Corvair with Porsche engine!  Plus are you ready to re-engine and modify trunk and rear suspension?  The 411 is a front engine,  rear drive suspension, or do you waht to mount the Porsche engine as a front or mid engine unit?  Do your homework before filing for bankrupty!  P.S. Porsche and VW engines rotate in the wrong direction for this even to consider conversion.  Pontiac Tempest rear ends were modeled on the Corvair, but accomodated the front mounted Iron Duke engine!

Are you talking about the VW 411?
