Wow I can't believe I've never updated this thread.  I've done so much work to this bus.  Hmm wonder if I can find all the photos.  IRS swap, 1600cc motor, built IRS bug transmission, Safari windows, Adjustable beam, flipped king pins, Built a roof rack, driven it all the way to Monetary!  It's one of my favorite rigs for sure!

Since it's been painted I've driven it up and down the coast, one of the first trips was to Long Beach and it just so happened to be on the kite festival weekend.  Of coarse I drove it on the beach this time and a few other times. IMG_4473.thumb.JPG.de3e1c3cf17c2cabff7678d2088851b5.JPG

fun trip.  As you can see it wasn't fully back together.  Then we went to Kalaloch beach again.  Kinda of a cool two pictures, first when I got it an then after it's painted.

After 4 of 5 years with the 1300cc engine and the gear reduction boxes it was time for some upgrades. Well that along with #4 cylinder loosing compression 😞  Got a 1600cc dual port and a bug IRS transmission.  The bug IRS trailing arms with some shock mount modifications works to convert the bus to IRS.  I used VW Things drums to keep the wide 5 lug pattern.  The trans is built by Rancho down in California.  It shifts so nice!  Now the bus can hit 60mph!  I plan on doing a Subaru engine swap this winter.  A heater and a good running engine would really be nice.

The amount of grease and dirt in the bay was so crazy!

The new transmission.  I bought it from a buddy from work.  He originally had it built for his bug.  It sat for so long when I got it in it wouldn't shift.  I had to pull it apart and lube the shift rods.  You also have to swap the front so it will work in a bus.  Just a few bolts no big deal.

We drove it for a few years like that.  It was amazing with 4 wheel working brakes, when I first got the bus only 1 front drum brake worked.  I never realized the rear brake wheel cylinders were frozen because the E-brake still worked until I pulled them apart to upgrade them.

Some defrost would be nice!

Next it's gotta be lower!!!!!!!!    Had the king pins rebuild and swapped.  I was going to do it myself but there are some shops that do it so cheap I didn't bother.  I also put adjusters and air shocks up front.  I wish it was lower but it still looks way better.  Greasy stuff!

I took it camping at the race track.  A guy was wearing this shirt.  He went and changed and gave me the shirt 🙂

From what I remember of the bug dune buggies I had didn't VW have a different form of heater/defrost every year?? Seemed like it. They only cleared a palm sized area in the bottom corners of the windshield. I friend has one of those gas powered heaters... it would start with a huge shotgun blast backfire. Was looking at maybe putting one like it in my 521 for the winters.
