AWSpoofwil
So I am once again seriously considering a (preferably dual cam) KA swap, but I have some questions and concerns.. HELP! 1, If I use the stock KA tranny, how hard is it to make tranny mounts? 2, can I use my stock 620 driveline for the KA tranny? Is there modification needed to be done? 3, where can I buy the engine mounts? 4, any other concerns that I should have in terms of mounting and hooking up? Quote Link to comment
Skib
assuming its for the 620... ... its all pretty well covered in the stickies and archives. Quote Link to comment
AWSpoofwil
Yeah its for my 78 620 KC.. and I know if I wanted to look I could find it but I don't really got time for that:/ Quote Link to comment

Icehouse
read this thread http://community.ratsun.net/topic/37-ka24e-into-a-620/ Using the napz trans makes the swap about 50 times easier. It's also in the thread. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Open up, here comes the spoon....1, If I use the stock KA tranny, how hard is it to make tranny mounts?Since you like short cuts, get a Z series (71B) 5 speed from a 2wd 720 or S110. Be sure it is 31.5" long and it will fit your 620 tranny mount and also bolt to the KA E or DE motor. You can use the KA (71C) transmission but the driveshaft will need shortening and the mount modified.2, can I use my stock 620 driveline for the KA tranny? Is there modification needed to be done? See above 3, where can I buy the engine mounts? There were no KA 620s so no mounts for them. You will have to use the engine brackets that come with the KA block and mount to the 620 rubber isolators. 4, any other concerns that I should have in terms of mounting and hooking up? WOW too general a question and might take several pages to answer. Let me ask one,... is this a KA24E or KA24DE motor and from a D21 or S13/14? Oh, hi jeff. 1 Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
If you use a KA24DE from a pickup, it goes into the pickup as a pickup Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
You can get mounts from me. The link is in my sig. Everything you need to read before doing the swap is in that link and in my build thread, also in my sig. Icehouses thread is super helpful and linked in my motor mount thread. thebucketslider
As I ere all to use the ka 5 speed you need to shorten the kc truck driveline 3.5 inches and slot the trans x member and remove the shrouding on the output of transmission. My question is about the gear ratios of the 720 5 speed and the ka 5 speed. Pretty sure the ka tranny is stronger tho. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Pretty sure the ka tranny is stronger tho. It is a bit. Bigger main shaft, etc. Really comes down to how you drive it though. If you aren't drag racing, the 720/200SX trans will hold up just fine. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 71C is about twice as strong as the 71B 5 speed. Better larger bearings, wider stronger gears, better synchros (specially 2nd) good for about 300 HP. The 720 5 speed is fine too. well it will probably be from a s13/s14.. and thank you! These are a lot heavier than the truck blocks. They also have a front sump oil pan that won't work in a truck. You can't swap a truck pan onto it easily as the car KA's had a crank girdle in the way. Custom oil pan. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Cut the front off and weld on the back with a longer or truck oil pick up tube. I think this would apply for either E or DE engines. Or get a 2wd. D21 KA24E or DE and the pan is closer to what you want. Quote Link to comment
AWSpoofwil
this is horrible, but idk what a D21 is... Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
D21 = "Hardbody" truck, aka 86-97 truck... I believe they had KA24E engines in them from '89 on. Pretty sure you have to go to the '98-07 D22 Frontier truck to get a KA24DE. Quote Link to comment
AWSpoofwil
Ah I see. So it sounds like the s13/s14 KAs are easier to come by? Quote Link to comment
Farmer
Theres more s14 out there than s13. And trucks ka's are very few inbetween. Quote Link to comment
AWSpoofwil
okay i figured as much. Quote Link to comment
AWSpoofwil
Would a tranny from a diesel 720 2wd work with the KA24de and fit my tranny mounts? Basically is the diesel 720 2wd tranny the 71B? Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
If it's an SD22 truck, I wouldn't think so? Isn't it a different bellhousing pattern? Quote Link to comment
620Aaron
If its a daily like mine and you want done real fast youre gonna end up spend a whole lot of money for the motor, tranny, mounts, fuse box/ switches, electric fan, probably want an aluminum rad and so on..... Something to really think about. I've thought many times but its not practical being in high school with no money its kinda hard to spend around a $1000 Quote Link to comment
