I'm BLUE
Well got my new u joints in while it was out took the diff apart an it's not good had metal shavings like No tomorrow pinion gear is missing some bite an after a lil I seen the pin that go's through the carier for the spider gears was out some Well it was snapped an was hitting the ring gear great day to spend my bday Lol but at least I checked it Pics when I get home good on u-joints and uhhhhhh errrrrrrrr  ouch ! Yeah pics would be good errrrr ... Can you just swap in a new H190 carrier ? ( If tight on money ) Maybe a whole new rear end swap is easier. IDK honestly as I have never worked on one. I would try to get the shavings out of the axle as much as possible before re-assembly though. If it were me ,,, I would just go with an entire good used axle assembly as you planned before :) but that's just me ! Link to comment
skyknight789990
I am tight on money but gonna see about the carrier did this before on my buddies 521 Link to comment
skyknight789990
Well more like the hole diff the pinion gear is pretty Well toasted Link to comment
wayno
Do you know what gears you have? 411 437 389 Half an inch is way to much play in the pinion shaft, I like it when they have about a 1/16" play or less. Link to comment
datzenmike
'79 4 and 5 speeds had 4.11 gears. I doubt you will find a set as that was the only year for the 620. All 2wd '80 720s had them and automatic long boxes. On the 720s look on the engine tag located on the inner fender under the pass side hood hinge. Look on the lower right corner. If it says HF43 that's a 4.375 ratio, HF41 is 4.11 and so on. The 720 tag below is HF38 for a 3.889 ratio diff. I wouldn't use a 4x4 diff stick with 2wd. If you can only find 4.375 be sure to pull the speedo drive cog out of that transmission. It's mated to the rear end and when swapped into your tranny will keep your speedometer accurate. skyknight789990
think i had 4:37 would like 4:11 Link to comment
datzenmike
If you have a '79 standard transmission it came with 4.11 from the factory. Well you have it out.... look on the outer rim of the crown gear. The ratio is stamped there. 37/9 = 4.111 35/8 = 4.375 37/8 = 4.625 Link to comment

]2eDeYe
Been there before... That 521 will likely have 4:88's, last time I picked up a diff at pick n pull it was $25. Takes about 20 minutes to pull if it's been in the truck for a while. Link to comment
datzenmike
Steve he has a '79 so it should have a 4.11 in it. The J13 motor 520s and the first year 521 ('69) had 4.88s in them. All L16 521s had (or should have) 4.375s. Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Yep, he mentioned getting the diff from his buddies 521 ;) Link to comment

harlow426@msn.com
Guy here in Springfield (OREGON) has a good rear-end 4 $75. I know he would take less...he made me a smokin deal on some other parts. Check the Craigslist postings in the "eugene" area & you should spot the ad. I regularly put 12oo-2200 lbs of payload(scrap steel) in my 82 720, and pull a trailer (1500-5000lbs) and have had ZERO problems w/the rear end-wheel bearings-driveline-ujoints. I do run redline synthetic fluids trans &rear-end. Believe it or not I have had 3060lbs(in other words 1.5 tons!) of steel in the back of my pick-up B-4 & drove 50 miles (30-50mph)......all time record truck-n-trailer together 10,215lbs-five tons+(1500frt axle,4480lbs rear axle, rest trailer). I have the load/scale tickets 2 prove it!! Someone must have been real "mean" or done something stupid to hurt the rear-end........I have had 3 720's 82-85-86 and couldn't break any of them. The 85 had 298 thousand miles (didn't burn any oil) & I never heard a clunk/whine/ping/etc from the rear-end. If you can't find the ad 4 the rear-end message me and I can dig up his e-mail I think. I need a windshield/gasket (cheap/free) 4 my 74 620 if u know of one. Also have a L18 w/ 120k original miles 4 sale (very strong!).Thanks...hope this helps. Link to comment
