Shagy
Almost bought a new f150 with it. But told myself....no 'cause you're gonna fuck with it. Wife saw me looking under the hood for areas to redo harge pipes and stuff..... Pretty cool motors Quote Link to comment
DanielC
My understanding is the engines are pretty good. Direct fuel injection, turbocharging, and the computer is controlling everything. The benefits of modern technology. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I say whoopy fuckin doo. Simulated 150K isn't 150K. So what, all motors can run on a dyno for 12 days straight. Pull a log down the road, again,so what!! it just look impressive. Baja so what? It's more about the vehicle finishing than the engine. The reason 1/3 don't finish can be anything from a rollover to a broken axle. How many don't finish because of the motor... sure ain't 1/3. It's probably a fine engine but so what? There are a lot of fine engines. The torture test was designed to make the engine look good not the engine making the torture test look easy. Think about it. Quote Link to comment

Think about it. exactly what i was looking for. im sure these are great engines, but i knew there had to be some sort of catch to their tests. you bring up some good points. also, with the dyno test, its running at a solid rpm, not going up and down. going up and down is harder on a motor, correct? DAT510
I bet if any other company spent millions in R&D for F/I they'd get a equivalent result. The wonders of turbocharging. Quote Link to comment
jon521
i wonder how much just an engine, computer, and trans cost............ too much Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
You mean millions for R&D like Nissan did on the SR20DET? As if that can put out double HP on dyno compared to the SR20DE. Propaganda. Ford spent Billions on the eco-boost. The new 2013 Mazda engine has 14:1 on pump gas. Nissan gets engines from France. 1 Quote Link to comment
RadioRedline
Think about it this way. How many engines has ford done right in the last 20 years? GM? Nissan? Toyota? Dare I say Chrysler? Why is the local junkyard ratio 80% Ford and Chrysler? Does ford and Chrysler sell 80%? Why do all the imports have 250km plus (most more) and why do all the escorts, tauruses, focuses, have avg 160km? Radio Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
How many engines has ford done right in the last 20 years? dozens of different engine designs. They are not in the JY because of the engines. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
You can bet that that motor got it's oil changed regularly, with good filters and quality oil, and tuned up on time, and genuine Ford parts, and good gas.... that's what keeps 'em going. In that simulater 150K was there a simulated 'oops I forgot to check the oil' or 'I coundn't afford the ford oil filter so I used a Fram' or 'I'll do the tune up in the spring when I can afford it' or 'It was making a sound but I kept going'. Keep them full of clean oil and filters and no overheating and almost any engine will last for ever. Remember the Chev 305? Remember how the cam lobes would wear right off? I had one in a Pontiac and several valve lobes had no bump left. Half were worn down enough to see by eye. Know what the cause was? GM decided to cheapen their cams and use crappier metals to save money because they never wore out. They tested likely in the same manner as this ford and everything was fine BUT.... only as long as the owner changed his oil on time. No one in the real world changes their oil and filter... on time. So the wear accelerated. The old SBCs were 'over engineered' and could take abuse and neglect. You can't simulate that on a dyno. Lets all agree to re-visit this post in ten years and see how many of those eco tech motors have survived the dreaded 'real world'. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, there are a lot of Fords in the JY. For the most part it's not the engine that goes bad. It's a million other things. People who own Japanese cars love the Japanese car more and keep them longer. The little things don't break down as much. Your're right about Ford, but I suspect not about the reasons why.
