made a cheapo short shifter.  
bent the rod with a torch to be in the right spot, the welded a steel ball to the base to increase the distance from the pivot point.

then moved the pivot point up on the trans.

forward-back throw is about 4 inches, even though I'm running a really long shifter (it practically touches the steering wheel)

hmm, from start to now, including registration and cost of building the dolly

 

shell 400

tires 50

wheels 150

registration 180

dolly 190

carpet 20

camber plates 100

exhaust tubing 50

oils, fluids, paints, cleaners, sand paper, misc metal and bolts ~ 180

 

about 1500 i guess.  can't really quantify the time I put in to it though, especially the labor I traded for the motor and suspension parts.
