Ah, the console was moveable. On the patrol boats I was on the 2 engines were side-by-side, 6 inches of clearance on each side and about 10 inches between them. The impeller wasn't too bad changing on the port engine, but was a real bitch in the starboard. And guess which side always burned out?

I recall there was a PMS item to "inspect" the impeller (annual? Can't remember) but I was pulling impellers on the other boats as a E2, E3. But when I was in the reserves, I was the "low guy" even as an E5. We had Chiefs fighting those damn impellers when they burned out on patrol.

That was nothing compared to trying to replace the serpentine belt. 3" clearance to the bulkhead... the belt shroud was 4" deep. Impossible to remove the shroud.

Morale on my ship (the Sacramento) was very low in 1995. The entire MWR fund was spent on Steel Beach picinics and paying off/repairing the decrepid "MWR Van" we bought from the Kansas City when it decommed. The CO was simply using my ship as a stepping stone to a Carrier command, though that dream ended when the Abe Lincoln and the Sac ran into each other in the middle of the Persian Gulf. THAT didn't help morale much either.
