510Goonies
Recently my 510 has been getting warm and I don't know why! It seems like it started when I took the heater out and bypassed it (it was leaking). I've since drained and refilled the radiator, bought new hoses, new cap, new thermostat, and even a new temp sender and its still showing warm/hot on the gauge. I've run the car with rad cap off to let air out multiple times and no dice! What could it be? I haven't messed with timing or anything of that nature either. One thing i noticed is that there isn't much flow through the rad, it's sort of stagnant. So I was going to replace the water pump next... gauge used to stay on the first line right of the "C" on the gauge . Quote Link to comment
Draker
Wait, that gauge reading is right in the middle... does it actually read higher than shown in the picture? 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
First, get a infrared thermometer and see what the actual coolant temp reads and compare to the gauge. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
why would replacing the water pump fix it?????????? when it worked before the heater swap. Dont be a dumbass and pull the rad to swap a water pump. That long bolt needs to come out that whty the rad needs to be pulled. most of the time the stat is closed, barely opens up if needed fix the heater core or get new one and reinstall. Heater acts like a rad also . Cant be it would cool it that much. going by the Temp gauge intications you gave. cheack the timming 1 Quote Link to comment
510Goonies
is that where it's supposed to be? hahaha Ive only had the car a few months and have hardly driven it! Everytime i did drive it always stayed at the first line and not at the middle! Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
middle is getting warm 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
I mean, you removed a part of the cooling system that cools the liquid. The temp is probably 10 degree or so higher than at the line. Hit it with a temp gun if you are concerned. 1 Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
If this is a 510 ,, what's the weird box in the upper left of picture? . Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
Not an original fuse box? Quote Link to comment
510Goonies
Nope, doesn't have an original fuse box. There's spaghetti (wire) everywhere that I need to clean up and tidy. Dug around and found my cheap little thermal temp gauge highest I got moving it around was 174. I am planing on fixing the heater, just fixing other things that needed attention so it will be going back in, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
don't remoeve it yet but its not a Datsun item. I don't know what it is. we were working on the first proplem of overheating 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
If u have to replaced anything, replaced the stat first but dont buy it at autozone. They are only 10 dollas. But corrolate first with IR gun, aim it at stat housing and also check for cold spots around rad, could be not flowing right. 1 Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
Did you see any signs of stop leak residue anywhere? Quote Link to comment
john510
If this is a 510 ,, what's the weird box in the upper left of picture? It looks like the box you use when you have electronic ignition but not the match box style distributor.Probably says Hitachi on it somewhere. Quote Link to comment
510Goonies
Everything has come from rockauto, and is either Gates or Stant brands. And yes, the box is Hitachi and is hooked up to the dizzy, probably explains why a stock 510 dist. cap don't fit! Quote Link to comment
510Goonies
Did you see any signs of stop leak residue anywhere? nope, looks clean. The joy of inheriting someones else's mods and fixes! I guess it's to be expected with 45 year old car 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
You can take out stat and see if it opens at around 18O, give or take about 10 degrees, by boiling it in water w a temp gauge like the ones use to check if meat is cook. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Can u take pic of hpw u bypass the heater? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
racerx he does have a photo hose from the front goes to the L shape elbow 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Hainz thanks for pointing that out did not see. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
maybe theres a huge airbubble in there but I seen a guy run it like this before somewhere on here. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Did u mess w timing, retard timing can cause it to overheat, running lean also or lose belt. The reason i say to boil ur stat cuz the stant one i bought recently was defective. 2X now, with datsun and 65 mustang. Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
maybe theres a huge airbubble in there but I seen a guy run it like this before somewhere on here.I've had that temp bypass from front to rear elbow for over a year now....haven't had temp issues....he might not have one either....sending unit is likely over 30 years old, he needs an aftermarket temp gauge and while at it get the combo...oil, voltage and temp setup....I've seen this over and over again and it's just a bad old thermostat housing sensor..... For shits & giggles....take off your radiator cap and let the stat cycle at least once....I like doing two personally....then top it off with coolant and put that cap back in....might just be an air bubble like Hainz said  Quote Link to comment
q-tip
If that's all the higher the temp is going you dont have much to worry about, that's only about 180° 2 Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
Get and aftermarket gauge and stop relying on the idiot gauge. Once you get a more accurate temp reading, then you can really start diagnosing the problem. 2 Quote Link to comment
