Datsunthug
Can a stock L16 be pulled with the transmission attached, or does the motor need to be separated 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
I believe they can stay together. 1 Quote Link to comment

jrock4224
you can if you pull the torsions bars .... makes it way easier but to be honest its a bitch .. i would do a 510 a 100 times more then a 521 ... 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
what? Just pull the motor Its EZ move the exhaust manifold to one side and ut a juck under the trans to push it up and this will be enough I remove the intake. then push the exhaust to the side. remove hood first 1 Quote Link to comment
Datsunthug
Hey jrock. If you give me a 510 for free I'll do the build. Since 510s are never free, I'll have a blast with my 521 that I scored for $0.00. 510s are sick rides 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Raise vehicle so transmission tail can drop when engine tilted up at front to clear the rad support. Disconnect the following first REMOVE BATTERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DRAIN TRANSMISSION it will pour out DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT exhaust down pipe. Flow guide valve hose to block vent pipe Throttle cable Electric choke (Blue wire) Idle cut solenoid (Rd wire) both go to rear of carb Two 10mm bolts holding the distributor in and lift it out with cap and wires so it doesn't get smashed. Unplug temp sender wire from front of thermostat housing, tie out of way remove top and bottom rad hoses FROM ENGINE and lift rad out so it doesn't get smashed. OPTIONAL.... remove fan blades so they don't get smashed. Disconnect wires from alternator, tie out of way Disconnect fuel line at fuel pump and tie up so it doesn't siphon.. Disconnect the oil pressure sender, tie out of way Unbolt, remove and tie starter out of the way, leave wires ON. Disconnect reverse lamp wires from transmission and engine and tie out of the way Unbolt slave cylinder after securing the push rod so it cannot fall out, and tie out of way Remove gear shifter. Disconnect driveshaft from bolt in spline at back of transmission. Support transmission, unbolt mount from cross member Unbolt both engine mounts Check for ground strap from rear of head or exhaust manifold to fire wall Loop chain around and under fuel pump and loop around rear exhaust manifold pipe and lift out by favorite method. There are adjustable slings for tilting the engine as you go. How you lift it out is up to you. 4 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
You can also get more clearance by removing the plate inside the cab that holds the shifter boot, and removing the shift lever from the transmission. If you still have the original bench seat, it will have to come out to get access to the screws holding the plate. I have removed and replaced transmissions from 521 trucks, leaving the engine in. I have removed and replaced engines leaving the transmission in. I have removed the engine and transmission together. It is easier to put the engine and transmission together out of the truck, but once together, the assembly is more difficult to handle, it is larger, and heavier. Putting the transmission, or engine into the truck first, and then the other is easier to move smaller pieces, but harder to align them correctly so they go together easily in the truck. In either case, putting the engine and transmission together outside or in the truck, aligning the clutch disk to flywheel and pressure plate is critical. Aligned perfectly, the engine and transmission just slide together very easily. If the clutch disk is not centered, the engine and transmission may not go together, no matter what you do. 3 Quote Link to comment
Datsunthug
Already pulled the seat and shifter. All that's left is the transmission mount bolts. Had to use a lighter to get the pic focused. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Well I would have just pulled the motor . would have been faster. about 1.5 hours. no crawling around. oh dont forget the trans plate on bottom side of trans when you separeat the motor the plate is in the way. the flywheel will hit 1 Quote Link to comment
