TR1PpyNick
ok so this is my first post and i don't even own a 510. the other day the idea popped into my head. ive always wanted a 510. and thought it would be a cool idea to make a p51 mustang themed 510. but i also want to put a cummins B4 tubro diesel in it. but i don't know if its even possible. is there even anyone that's done it? also what would be a good price to get a 510 and what to look for as in terms of rust, wear, ect. datzenmike
Fifty five HP and weight between 700 and 800 pounds and then a transmission.... I'm going to say probably not. Nissan makes a small SD22 or SD25 diesel but I don't know the weight, wayno might. The stock 510 engine is 250 pounds, so 3X the weight isn't good. If you are looking at the Cummins this means you are either familiar with them or have one laying around. Save up for the most complete 510 you can afford and enjoy driving it around and forget the diesel. 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
Anything is possible if you throw enough time and money at it, but that engine is to big for even a 720, the engine oilpan could be sitting on the ground in a 510 engine compartment and the top of the engine will still be sticking out the hood. q-tip
The 4bt is WAY too big to fit in a 510, if you want to go diesel I would go Mercedes, om617 would be my choice. Its a 5cylinder, has a vague resemblance to an L series and will get you 130hp with a tune. Quote Link to comment
TR1PpyNick
a little bit more research and came up with a detroit diesel series 50. 320hp and 1,120ft.lb of torq. what is the max height a motor can be in a 510? ok scratch that idea, its over 2k lbs...that wont work... datzenmike
Try to be reasonable. Why diesel? You don't own a 510 but talk about swapping an impossible engine into it? Quote Link to comment
TR1PpyNick
because i want to, you dont think it would be cool to have a diesel 510? Quote Link to comment
TR1PpyNick
now the OM617.950 was upgraded with sodium valves and oil squirters and a heavy duty crank. does anyone know where i could find this particular engine? Quote Link to comment
wayno
Diesel engines are not big HP engines, they put out torque, I just don't think about a 510 hauling a huge trailer around, and any diesel engine you can get in there just isn't going to move particularly fast. All these engines you are mentioning remind me of this photo below. Quote Link to comment
TR1PpyNick
i was allways told torq was more important, just as long as you have the right gears. Quote Link to comment
wayno
On cars, most people like HP, torque is more of a truck thing, you need torque to get heavy loads moving. I like being different, and I am certainly different, but the diesel engines you are talking about are for full size heavy duty trucks like what them engines come in, they just are not made for a 510. I have a few diesel trucks(521 and 720), but I did most my first 521KC diesel build before I told anyone, I have found it better to just do it and then let the chips fall where they will fall, once I was that far into the build, most on here didn't have much except positive things to say, but I was posting a lot of photos, so that makes everything alright, photos fix everything. This is my Datsun 521KC diesel truck, and this is the SD25 diesel engine in it, it's a tight fit. See, photos make everything better. 2 Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
VW TDI mated to a Toyota 22R 5 speed (acme adapters). These motors are great for building power. Relatively new. Just look up how to delete the EGR physically (and telling the computer its gone), and wire it up. The engines stock application, they can easily achieve greater than 40mpg, while still passing somebody never dropping from 5th gear. Its already a car motor too. Diesel engines for cars makes a lot of sense, just not the old ones which make no power compared to the modern day direct injection and common rail diesels. 2 Quote Link to comment

bananahamuck
Do this,, Acme adapters make very inexpensive adapters for what you get,, i seen a diesel Zuki kit installed and it fit perfectly. banzai510(hainz)
be honest that was a nice build the guy did, a nissan Patrol would be better with that diesel. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
be honest that was a nice build the guy did, a nissan Patrol would be better with that diesel. I think a patrol would need a little more engine, like the sd25 that they put in the scout. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
there was a landrover 110. cool looking rig right hand drive. the British layland motor look like a baby Kobota motor He said this was the bigger engine. Yes I seen the Scout Diesels. still slow Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Never said it would be fast, just more torque, and still nissan Quote Link to comment

Dat Lurka
The Mercedes 5 cylinders from the w123 chassis would stick a foot out of the hood lol. I've always wanted to try it though. I've had several 300's around here Quote Link to comment
