See, here's the problem with those.  It's like the Challenger.  For some reason, they've chosen to paint the rocker panel black.  Probably to hide it, because if you paint it body color, you realize very quickly the car is too tall on the sides.  The Challenger (new) has the same problem.  Look at the old Challenger, it looks right.  The natural finishing point on the IDx is where the door edge ends.  Not the 4 inches of plastic beneath it.

It's only there to hide the pinch welds on the bottom of the rocker. Which is one of the things on a real 510 that lets it down.  B)

But that's the thing.  It's too high a side.  Why do they think things are better if they make them really tall?  Look at a classic muscle car.  The bottom rocker wraps under like it should, the door/roof area is proportionally correct to the door/rocker area.  Not like these new cars where you have 10 feet of door followed by 2 feet of window.  It's fucking clown shoes I tell you!  If you erase that bottom rocker cover and smooth out the shape, the car looks proportionally correct.

It's like putting running boards on a pickup.  Stupidest thing ever, makes the sides taller, ruins the lines, and catches on rocks.  Rocker guards yes, running boards no.

They don't think it's better, they think it's "safer". Less glass and more air bags/door beams make everyone feel safer.

Ah yes, how could I forget.  Fuck that noise.  Airbags are for pussies.  Yes in the event of a high speed crash they will help, but you know what?  Driving is dangerous, if you can't handle it, take the fucking bus!  The NTHSA can suck a big fatty.  What they need to do is put out a survey to all Americans regarding their driving practices.  The survey needs to be designed by Sebastian Loeb.  If anyone answer, "Oh yes, I need an airbag and really high doors for extra security!!" they're instantly stripped of their driving privileges and given a bus pass. ;)

Its really ridiculous when you think about airbags

For every one airbag that saves someones life, something like 2000 have to go off for no reason whatsoever.

Additionally, the NHTSA was faced with a choice, either make drivers better, or put airbags in cars, I will let you figure out which they chose.

Not to mention that making drivers better, would inevitably bring down fatality rates, but whatever.

Then there was the 80's, when you either had to have an automatic seatbelt or an airbag to sell a car in the US.

It is absolutely the Nanny society, "aww its okay if you cant drive, we'll make it so you cant hurt yourself or anyone else while your drigint terrible"

And just a note, How many busses have airbags? and how many people are killed worldwide yearly in bus crashes??, lolol.

From the recent BRE newsletter...

Nissan Unveils Successor to the 510
Let's start right at the top of the news

528.jpg

Brock signs VIP wall at Design Center with SVP Shiro Nakamura Nissan Styling approached us a few months ago with an interesting concept. There are many times when Brock is shown a concept someone is excited about and Brock sees lots of styling issues. Not this time. The new designs were very exciting. This project was obviously the successor to the 510 which we've all been begging for. Then of course there was the question as to whether or not we were okay with them using the BRE livery on the sporty version of the car.  For something this worthy, of course.

Nissan finalized their plans and invited us to Japan for the unveiling of the cars at the Tokyo Auto Show. Thanks to Nissan, our trip was first class all the way.

529.jpg

Brock with IDx design team Our first day was a whirlwind. We started at Nissan's Global Design Center. We were taken to a room where both show cars were. Stunning, stunning, stunning! Brock couldn't stop walking around the Freeflow, pointing out all the details that made it special.

Then we walked over to the second car in the room (images shown below from the Auto Show). Even under a cover we could see a hint of the BRE stripes. Exciting! The cover came off and it was another breathtaking design. The Nismo IDx. Beyond the exterior design, the interior details were completely different then the Freeflow. These are really breakthrough cars... just like the 510 was.

We next went to the Nissan Heritage Collection at Zama. Nissan has done a great job of gathering together cars that represent their entire history, starting 80 years ago in 1933 (btw - Mr. K being 104 years old means he was 24 when Nissan began!). A highlight was to see the Nissan GTP car that John Morton drove in the '90s with Geoff Brabham (Brock seen here standing behind the car at the museum).

532.jpg

NISMO HQ Entrance Design Center, Heritage Collection, that would make for a pretty special day. It was only 3:30 though. Next... the new NISMO Headquarters. What a change from what we saw four years ago when we visited as part of Mr. K's 100th birthday celebration. In a brand new facility, in the location where Nissan's manufacturing first resided in Yokohama, it was a totally different experience than four years ago. We first walked into a beautiful showroom. Next was the customer service center. Can you imagine having your Nismo serviced by Nissan themselves, in a facility that looks like this?

531.jpg

Beyond the view of the camera we saw the NISMO race car build areas including motors being built and NISMO wind tunnel models, the highlight of the tour for Brock.  A special thanks to Manaki Iwamoto (seen here with Brock) who not only gave us a wonderful tour during this trip but he was also our special guide when we visited four years ago for Mr. K's 100th birthday celebration.

533.jpg

It was now 6pm. A full day has come to an end... NOT! We were now driven to Nissan's 80th Anniversary Celebration at Nissan's Global Headquarters, also in Yokohama. We walked in to about 40 people standing by to help with whatever a person might need. CEO Carlos Ghosn (seen here) greeted the throngs of well wishers to Nissan's 80th birthday bash. What an amazing experience. And what great friends we saw.

534.jpg 535.jpg

Nissan Blade Glider We walked in to first spot Ben Bowlby, designer of the Delta Wing that raced at Le Mans in 2012. That's where Brock and Bowlby first met. Designer-to-Designer a firm bond was immediately created. What a delight to not only see Ben but to find that Ghosn would be unveiling a street version of the DeltaWing that night. A progressive, three seat delta-shaped car called the Blade Glider. Ben was over the moon, as he should be. It's a stunning car, and concept, that is difficult to capture in photos. After a great day our car took us back to our hotel. The following days' adventures are shared below.

The Tokyo Auto Show!
The special day arrives to unveil the new Nissan IDx

547.jpg

We arrived at Tokyo's Big Sky convention center at 8am.  The Nissan display was impressive.  The Delta Wing inspired Blade Glider was already in view on stage.  The NISMO IDx was on stage but encircled out of sight by a black curtain.  CEO Carlos Ghosn would drive the NISMO Freeflow on stage himself when the presentation started at 10:30am.

548.jpg549.jpg550.jpg

The first day of the show was only attended by media and they started to gather (top photo).  At 10:30 the lights went down and a video played showing the new NISMO GTR making a record breaking run at the Nurburgring. As the video ended the new GTR came rolling out onto a side stage.  Next a side door opened and here came the Freeflow driven by Ghosn.  A beautifully designed, rear wheel drive street car.  The murmur of the words "510" were heard throughout the crowd.

 553.jpg

As Ghosn got out of the car he turnedtoward the black curtain and as it rose he made comment about honoring their racing past.  The NISMO IDx came into sight with the BRE racing livery.  The two cars were the hit of the show.  Brock was brought on stage several times for media photos.  Ghosn was on stage several times throughout the day being interviewed on camera about the cars.  It was all quite an honor with numerous Nissan designers coming up to meet Brock. It was an amazing day!  But not the end of the week... more below.

A Special Visit with Mr. K

At 104 Mr. K is still a delight

556.jpg

A highlight during the Tokyo Auto Show was having lunch with Mr. K and his son Mitsuo Katayama.  We met Mr. K at the Nissan booth after the unveiling of the IDx.  Brock showed him the cars on stage.  Mr. K was quickly spotted by Nissan personnel and given a grand tour of the booth which included a history display of Nissan's 80 years.

557.jpg

We then went to lunch where we had a great conversation.  Mr. K is as lively as ever.  His sense of humor was in good form as he handed Gayle his business card, explaining he was the official greeter of Hamamatsu, the town where he grew up that named a street after him on his 100th birthday.  With his wonderful smile and twinkling eyes he told her that if she showed the business card to people in Hamamatsu she could get a free ride in an elevator.  What a delightful man. Seeing Mr. K again after his 100th birthday (the last time we were in Japan) was purely wonderful.

We Have You! to Thank
Coming out with the IDx, Nissan sights your enthusiasm for the BRE Datsuns

572.jpg

Orders include new BRE Stylus Pens

As we were shown throughout the Nissan Design Center, we saw old Datsun ads showing the production 510s alongside the BRE 510s.  A presentation was shown to us about the research that Nissan did, searching for where the enthusiasm in the market is today. They found your BRE tribute cars, they found your BRE Datsuns in today's computer games (in every game they said). You! made these 510-like cars happen.

Thank you, as always, and even more today, for your support. On that note, we found a great new pen we had to get to place in every order.  The end is soft rubber so it's the perfect stylus for your computer or phone and with a quick click it's a ballpoint pen.  We love them and know you will too.

Its frankly disgusting and disingenuous.

It says to me

"Hi, we're Nissan, and we know you recognize the car that this is very loosely based off of, and we know that it is hip right now, but...., Frankly,  We no longer give a flying F#%K about the people that bought them originally, own them today, the people who really made Nissan what it is, or the people who still keep the history of Datsun/Nissan alive"

and

"here ya go hipster douchebags, enjoy, we know you will, cause we told you to"
