The curse of the Wankle rotary, only Mazda made it work. American Motors bet on GMs version and designed the Gremlin for it. That's why there is so little room in the driver's compartment after AMC had to cram a straight six into the existing design. 2 Quote Link to comment

Originally the engine was supposed to have a stainless steel head gasket. "Too expensive" cried the beans. Put in an ordinary gasket. It didn't work with the aluminum to cast aluminum alloy/silicon engine block so failed. The water leakage into the block ruined the engine. That's why the expedient cylinder liner or over boring and acid etch work arounds had to evolve among die hard owners. Note that the death valley test run resulted in 1 of the 4 card blowing its timing chain [which the disinformation publicity crew cleverly insinuated was a fan belt]. The result of this fiasco was that GM sold the Aluminum/silicon technology to Porsche which made very good use of it. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The rotary is an evolutionary dead end. Mazda improved on it but didn't perfect it. Seals are still a problem though better, emissions are through the roof, poor fuel economy and poor oil economy. They do make good power when revved up but no good for car engines that have to idle and accelerate up and down. Doesn't a Wankel wear out and need rebuilding more often??? 1 Quote Link to comment
Mattndew76
A much better engineering job of a rotary engine. Liquid Piston. https://www.liquidpiston.com/how-it-works Edited November 10, 2020 by Mattndew76 3 Quote Link to comment

Just think of the rotary as a small V8. Doesn't seem so bad on mileage that way. 1 Quote Link to comment
goes2fast
A rotary is basically the same as a 2 stroke which will always have emissions problems. 3 Quote Link to comment
goes2fast
I don't know if I posted this one before but I built this one about 25 years ago, The valve cover was finned with black wrinkle paint and I machined the fins off and polished myself then had it custom engraved. 2 Quote Link to comment
