I'm robbing the bell-housing off the 4spd ...

.... Off to the machine shop it goes .......

having it machined out ... (measure everything before they do right ? ;) )

..... Bring it back to my place and fit it on the KA24DE transmission.

I'll then shorten down (or have shortened) one of my spare 72-73 240z drifeshafts aprox 2" (haven't decided how much freeplay I want exactly)

I also have the KA24DE trans mount and cross-member still attached , so I just may modify that to fit in mine :) . Time will tell though right ? haha.

 

Install the 4.11 or 4.38 diff ( or possibly a different one :sneaky: )

Install the rebuilt half-shafts (once my parts get here that is lol)

Look into a cheapo ISIS 240sx short-throw shifter as well , but we shall see.

 

I have other stuff going in , but am a bit "off" right now lol

I believe some have done the process :) ,  but I don't believe too many people in the real world have done it to be straight-forwardly honest ;)

This is a neat process to go through for me !!  :D

 

I'm also a bit farther behind than I wish to be (all projects combined not just this one lol)  , but hey... as long as the weather stays good ... I'll have no excuses !! ... this little "task" should be acheived :thumbup:

If you can find a driveshaft from a series one before they converted to the backward placement of the r-180, it is already the length you need.

I indeed have one of those in my posession , and was def counting on it in this case.

Wanted to check that length out for sure... (once I get it all back-together + bolted up) then I can see for my own eyes ya know lol :D

Reason being are my measurement's of my "c" type transmissions ..... conflict with a couple other's other measurements on the web .. lol

( I measured my "c" SX and SR transmissions --- exactly how datzenmike instructed *whip snap* ... :lol: )

Just wanna make sure I hit it on the nose !! :)

 

I figured if I needed to have a spare shortened regardless for $90-$130 .. so be it ya know ? :) ( worst case/most cost.. scenario )

Hey great looking z.  I know this was a few pages back but, what vehicle did the R180 differential with 4.11 gear come from?  Also what year and or vehicle did the axels come from?  Im new to the z car.

Had to play "who will machine this" game with about 6+ machine shops. (understandably though really..)

I did have a couple of generous offers , and I wanted to say Thankyou very much again as it's much appreciated !!!

 

Getting the front-case clean/ready for the machine shop (A requirement in this case).

 

Scrubbed with a quick brillo type pad ? (can't remember the brand/name.. harmless though).

 

 

Cleaner than it was by far---

 

 

Will pressure wash , another scrub , and rinse then send it on it's way.

---- Half-Shaft dis-assembly ----

 

I decided to dis-assemble my spare halfshafts to determine if they are indeed good candidates for rebuild/parts/or... !?

Couple of run-of-the-mill snap-ring pliers , side-cutters , pliers , and a flat-bladed screw-driver (somewhere lol).

 

Sorry for the grainy/blurry pictures in advance. My hands were greasy therefore the phone ended up being a bit that way :-/

 

 

Pulled back the boot on one of them and dis-covered a tiny tear which I made bigger before the picture... ( was fairly firm on the boot.... it goes through stressed/stretched ou abuse so why shouldn't I mimic this ya know ? lol )

 

Clipped off the stainless steel boot bands with side-cutters. (was later at night so I didn't want to make any noise...)

 

On to the second band closest to the differential (inner).

 

 

Peeled back the inner boot in order to reach the inner c-clip.

 

 

A better angle of that inner c-clip I mentioned above ^^^ ( wiped off majority of grease for it to be seen :) )

 

I decided to use slighty "heavier" duty 90-degree angled snap-ring pliers.

Behind the snap-ring just taken out ^^^ there is a shim. Took it out and slid it down the shaft.

 

Shim and Snap-ring together. Just left them on there as they have no-where else to go :)

 

Flipped over the half-shaft and am now looking at the "butt" end of it (end that faces in towards the differential 3rd member).

There is a snap-ring to take out here as well.

 

 

90-degree snap ring pliers are used here again.

I then decided to push/lightly knock down the halfshat in the correct spot... to "nudge" the aluminum plug with an o-ring attached to the outer rim area out of the half-shaft.

 

Pulled off that cap to re-veal this wonderful goodness :D

 

This is a retaining spacer/washer for the (4) rows of balls/spacers in each joint.

Notice the (4) tabs ?

 

slighly gooey...

 

 

Pulled the "male" end of the shaft out of the "female" housing.

See that (4) point retainer we were talking about earlier ? Held in by you guessed it...

 

3-balls + 3-spacers = per half-shaft assembly (at least these two assembly's ... lol)

Area closest to the top of the picture = differential end of male half-shaft plunger.

 

Was time to pull it apart.

WARNING: --- Do not do this in an area where if you drop a ball it will never be found again = yard , dirt , gravel , etc :)

I dropped 1 ball thinking I would be able to "catch" them all ... boy was I wrong ... luckly I setup a "catch box" for this very purpose :cool:

 

You'll see the balls rotating/wearing into the spacers... wouldn't worry about it too much.

Just been working on other projects and cleaning these as I go where I can.

Should be done before I and you know it though... *knock on wood*

I finished cleaning the front case and boxed it up (with many layers in sensitive areas) then shipped today via UPS Ground.

lol... yeah there is quite a few things being taken apart/inspected/rebuilt/or-screwed up by myself :lol: ;)

I learned to have bigger projects outside , evening projects , and later night projects ... funny thing is ... I'll move from one project to the next if I get frustrated ... in order to lax-out a bit from the last project lol (or if I don't have tools/parts)

 

Yeah I was going to get married not that long ago , and that never happened (thank gawd... I can see clearly now ! LOL )

You should consolidate your write ups onto a disc and sell it on ebay. Like those "how to rebuild you ____ engine." Might be a decent money maker, and you would just need to use the material you are already working with anyway.
