barricade88
Yeah we checkd te timing and it was dead on. What should it be tho? And I don't think we checked all of that stuff you said Quote Link to comment
barricade88
We re did the timing chain about a year and a half ago when I got in a wreck. New gears and everything. It ran strong but it started backfiring out the carb so I bought an outlaw weber and put it on. And it still does it Quote Link to comment
wayno
Check your valve clearances, one day while I was driving down the freeway my truck started back firing out the carb, turned out the valves were out of adjustment, they were to tight and a couple had no clearance at all. It ran strong but it started backfiring out the carb well that says soemthing!!!!!!!!and you put another carb on there and the same. I only you kow if the chain is coorcet per the timming marks. if GOOD, then ck the other stuff I have mentioned. My L16 with a mild cam with a 38/38 would do 80mph and has a 4.37 gear ration so you know its spinning up fast. L20 is a longer stroke but think you could do 70mph pretty ez Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Put your foot down and go. It wont break the OHC engine. Quote Link to comment
Dat Lurka
I put my foot down in fourth with no secondary on carb and do 75mph. That's with 228k miles. Can't complain. It's fun winding the bitch out just to keep up with traffic. Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah, I'll re check the chain and everything else. Thanks, and my friend want to sell me dual port offensively intake and a 390 c f m Holley carb for $500... Should I buy that Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
No you shouldn't buy it. If you cannot rev up the engine to its 7000 RPM redline now, how will an oversized carb help you? Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah, I just don't know what to do to stop the bogging out and dieing Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Might be plugs... If they're fouled it would cause some issues. Have you ever done plugs, wires, cap and rotor? Mine had similar issues and my plugs and wires were to blame Quote Link to comment
wayno
Yeah, I just don't know what to do to stop the bogging out and dieing Are you going to be around tomarrow, I could come over there, or you could come over here, I would be interested in hearing/seeing what it does, and looking at everything in general. bloodontheapex
I don't have a lot of experience with the L20, but back fires from the carbs sounds like a timing issue. Did you buy the 38/38 brand new? How do you know the jetting hasn't been messed around with? Are you sure it's bogging out rich? Do you see/smell gas? Is the carb tuned correctly? barricade88
Yeah, timing is dead on, carb was brand new, an I have a 140 in it an bills Datsun in Clackamas out a 117 and it ran a little better for the co2 or CO but the bogging continued. And it's running very rich. I had gas in my oil. And yeah wayno I can swing by tomorrow Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Converted to Datsun, yeah I changed spark plugs, wired, new rotar and distributor cap and it did the same thing Quote Link to comment

bloodontheapex
Hm, float sticking when you get on it, carb floods, engine dies. That is my guess. Quote Link to comment

dr.feltersnatch
pull out your spark plugs and read them, by read i mean if they are black and sooty its too rich. and start with the basics. new plugs. they are cheap enough to just grab a new set, dont bother cleaning the old ones. check your timing with a timing light. is your vacuum advance hooked up and working properly? what ignition are you running? points? if so check or replace those. are you running an air filter? is it dirty? check your valve adjustment. check your compression. then report back. I was thinking the vacuum advance as well. If he installed the 38/38 himself, maybe he didn't route the lines correctly. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Vacuum advance hooked up incorrectly won't cause sooty plugs. Somebody needs to go over and HELP this guy. Quote Link to comment
