barricade88
I need to decide wether or not I should buy this Nissan truck and put the z24 motor and rear end in my 78 Datsun 620. I have an original l20b in it but want better performance and better mpg. What should I do? I'm paying $500 for the truck and 600 for labor. Ill get some back when I scrap the truck. Is this a good deal or what. I'm 18 and need to know what is best. Thank you Quote Link to comment
Skib
your paying $1100 to have a Z24 in your 620? nothing special about a Z24 better off picking up a KA24, some mounts from redeye, and a canam box from icehouse. Quote Link to comment
Dat Lurka
For that money you can build a big fat roaring l20b. Or buy a complete running Z car if you're looking for more perfoemance. Quote Link to comment
barricade88
So should I just say no to the guy and do something else with my money? Cuz I'm tired of having a l20b that doesn't have power. Quote Link to comment
Skib
for 1100 you can do plenty with the L20b Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah, my biggest problem is a rear end. And I have too tall of gears. I'm shooting like 5,000 rpms goin like 50... And my Datsun guy moved and I need help with my truck Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Definitely not worth it. The Z24 has about the same peak HP as the L20B (at 5000 rpm). Z24 does have more HP in the lower RPMs, but if just rev up the L20B it'll move out. Tall gears make less RPMs on the freeway. Sounds like you have short, steep gears. That's what gives the most acceleration. But I think you are guessing at the RPMs. It's probably doing 3500 at 50. Put your foot down and let it rev up! Quote Link to comment
I'm BLUE
Labor cost isn't un-reasonable. Depending on the list agreed on. Run a compression check on your l20b ... if good ... Cam it ... side-draft it ... and have fun ! KA if you have money , skills , tools , and time to spare. Engine conversions are always more work then we think they are going into it... ggzilla
Not unreasonable. Just not worth it. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Sounds like what you really need is a 5 speed. I can cruise pretty comfortably at around 80 on the freeway with my L20b and a 5 speed. You can also get a closed chamber head which does give noticeable gains in power. Oh and about mpg's haha I get around 26 on my combined driving also thanks to my 5 speed and other small upgrades Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah, and if I Flore it my truck puts out and dies. Like the carb is getting too much fuel... Idk.. Quote Link to comment

Skib
Yeah, and if I Flore it my truck puts out and dies. Like the carb is getting too much fuel... Idk.. you dont need new motor you need to fix the L20 because theres clearly a problem Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah I know. But I don't know where to start. I've tried timing, checking my carb, no vac leaks. I'm stumped Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Almost sounds like a vacuum leak... Check the vacuum lines for cracks or unhooked. Could be the carb too, a rebuild kit for the stock carb is only 20 bucks from auto zone. I rebuilt my carb on my kitchen table in an hour Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Yeah, It's a brand new outlaw weber carb.. And I closed off all my vaccume leaks. Quote Link to comment
barricade88
I was thinking its getting too much fuel. Or needs to be re jetted Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Make sure the manifold was completely scraped clean of all the old gasket. Even a little bit can cause a leak at the base of the carb and cause stumbling or hesitation. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Yeah, and if I Flore it my truck puts out and dies. Like the carb is getting too much fuel... Idk.. I don't know a lot about down draft carbs, but I likely can take a look at the truck. The rearend is an easy fix, if it actually needs anything done, I am doing about 4000rpms at 70mph, I have 437 gearing, do you know your gearing? What does "puts out" mean? Does it back fire out the carb, did it back fire out the carb before you put the new one on? Quote Link to comment
Skib
have you actually got a tach in your truck? Quote Link to comment
barricade88
It was, my dad and I filed it down Quote Link to comment
barricade88
Skib no I do not Quote Link to comment
Skib
then I highly doubt the accuracy of your 5000 rpm guess Quote Link to comment
