hmmmm, maybe someone should make a electrical diagnostic thread...

  • 1 month later...

I might start a new thread for this in the electric section.  But, I am trying to install delay/intermittent wipers in my truck.  While fixing a dual tank switch on a 1990 Ford F350 at work, I noticed that the wiper switch looks, mounts, and kinda functions like mine. so I went to the junk yard and got me the switch and delay box out of a 89 F250? (don't remember).

With the datto switch, off is all the way in, pull out one click for low and two for high and rotate for washer.  With this ford switch you rotate from the off position (center), on click right for low, two for high.  for the delay options you rotate freely left from the off position and pick a desired speed.  And push in for washer.

Anyways...

What ive done so far... Picture time...happy0161.gif

ground down old threads, and put new threads that match the datto..

So now im down to the wiring, Hopefully I can get this to work...party0031.gif

Anyone have a wiper wiring diagram for a 80-91? ford f150-f350?

You have more switches?- what would you like for one?

Maybe I missed it, but are you actually going to run dual tanks in the 521? My dad had an older Chevy with two tanks and it was awesome as a young kid who would sometimes forget to fill up... or stretch out the gas until dad decide to fill up so I didnt have to pay

Link to comment

No dual tanks.  I was referring back to when I found the ford switch. I was fixing the dual tank switch on the F350 at work....  only second tank for me is the gas can in the bed, operated manually. By running out of gas, getting out, fill tank with can. a dab in the carb and start....

I got the extra two for a couple of reasons.  If Jon and/or Hans wants to do this setup. Or if I want one for my 510. Or if one is titts up...

There should be an abundance of these things.  F series is the world greatest selling truck isn't it? I got three switches at the same J/Y.  there was more trucks, but switches already gone...  And if you wanted this setup new, you can still get it.  But, if more show up at this yard ill grab em...

Figuring shit out... :geek:

hmmmm... :geek:

The ford switch is positive switching and the datto is negative switching... (maybe that's why Datsun is no longer, glass half empty thinking.  Ford glass half full... still around...hmmm)    Im hoping I can just reverse the polarity of the wiper motor... motor will go in reverse, but since its on a cam arm it effectively does the same thing right?  hmmmm. testing will commence tomorrow...

Hmmm well if those two pass, I can throw you some green if the mod works out. I can bring the cash when we do the 510 rear seat deal :D

Yes, you should be able to reverse the motor and it should run fine. Motos should go either way. Hopefully the stop on the arm movement wont be affected by that, but I doubt it.

I know all to well of reversing polarities on electric motors, so does Jon.  Racing RC cars, trying to get your car out for the next race while everyone is waiting.  As you throw your car on the track and run to the drivers stand.  And as you hit the throttle your cars screams backwards into a wall... all for everyone to point and laugh, as you grab your car and head to the pits with your walk of shame...

And as for the wipers, if I cant figure it out...

Ah fuck I,t ima jus do dis.

Love the delay mod!!

If the wiper is a permanent magnet motor, the direction will reverse with the polarity change.  If it's like the starter, it will run the same direction even after the polarity is reversed.  I know the 320 wiper motor didn't care which way it was wired when I converted it from pos grnd to neg grnd.

Sounds like a Jon move

when it would happen to me i would go for extra lulz....by just holding it wide open in frustration n trying to navigate the track best i could ......while lulz are being had,  i inevitably break my car due to both frustration of putting my end bell on backwards and the irreverent pointing and laughing .....it happened frequently for awhile and the track owner would get pissed at my wide open bassackwards driving .......frank u need to come race again..... u homo.....fuck intermitent wipers .......i lulzed when u said a set for your 510.......wont it need a motor in  it before the wiper concerns

Looks like good work Frank. Having intermittent wipers would be sweet... maybe this is something that can be adapted to my '69. Im already doing a bunch of dash wiring so, this shouldnt be a problem.

Tristin -- I will keep a look out for more switches.  One of my delay boxes did turn out to be tits up...

I got the motor to work the next day.

heres a short vid on the 1 second delay (I believe its 1-15 sec for the setup)

th_2013-06-16_12-16-35_83_zpsd10e677f.jp

But, when I installed it it blew a fuse when I turned it on.  Turns out the wiper motors utilize the housing for the ground.  So when I swapped it, it energized the housing.  Worked outside of the truck, but not inside...

And just because Modifications seem to breed modifications, I found a 510 wiper upgrade here : http://dimequarterly.blogspot.com/2011/08/tech-how-to-mazda-wiper-motor.html

I decided I would try this on the 521.  They use the same motor. Now the two Mazda motors in the dime quarterly article, they mount opposite each other.  And the article doesn't tell you what one mounts what way...  bummer for me. I ordered the wrong one.  So, after waiting a week for the wrong motor, I have the other on its way...

So, just for FYI...

the 1984-1987 Mazda 626 mounts opposite of stock, but has the same plug as factory 510

the 1981-1984 Mazda GLC mounts the same way, but has a different plug.  (to Be determined) tho it looks like the 521 style.

So I started on my washer system.  Hmmm, what bag to use?

The lathe......lol....he's not joking we both had one......handy old com stick ......so the reason it didn't work was the mounting .....did u figure out the polarity issue ?....looking forward to end of this......do want......PS coolant fixed my FML.texts from yesterday .....lol.....
