paramedicopace
Is the Fiat X19 better then the MR2 rack and pinion? Anybody with thoughts or experiance please let me know. Thanks Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
MR2 is easier to get parts for..What are you thinking of using it on? ..MR2s are pretty wide Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
My 72 510. I saw that the Fiat is a little narrower then the MR2 resulting in less bump steer. I've built bajas with the narrow racks that have the same lenght tie rods with no prob. The 510 with a KA swap will not allow for this setup due to the steep angles on the U joints. I'm just wondering what people have to say. I've read the thread on rack and pinion but just want to elaberate. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
That`s cool i >>>assumed<<< the racks were to wide because they are only about 2 1/2 inch smaller track width than a 87-9? supra. Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
Do you have any experiance with racks in 510's Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
Nope..but i have a few mr2s and one of my brothers used to be way into X19s and those things were a bitch to get anything for ..But that was before the internet The ones i have seen on the internet seem to have been 240z racks into 510s,, but i think they have to switch the steering TC arms from front to back ( or vice versa ) and not sure how they did it.. paramedicopace
Ya good call I think though the X19 rack is pretty much the narrowist rack tahat you can get. The MR2 however you can get the Quief quick steer along with everyting else. I just don't want a bunch of bumpsteer. This is a reserch project that I want to get right. Putting a turbo KA in and just want quick and non sloppy stedering. Quote Link to comment
HRH
What's the end to end length on the Fiat rack? I have a Chevette rack coming that I'll be putting in my 510 if all goes well. 41" end to end. Quote Link to comment
datsunwizard
How about the new Fiat 500 or the Smart car for possible donors, they have to be pretty short. I don't know if they are front or rear steer though? More research needed. I might boil down to a custom rack to not have any bump steer. An off the shelf rack is going to be a compromise in one form or another. Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
Get a Pinto steering rack. Most Hot Rod, custom and race car builders use them. Quote Link to comment
HRH
Pinto rack is too long. Checked into that. Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
Fiat is 20.75'' from pivot to pivot maybe the shortest i've heard of. Maybe ill get one and see if I could cut it down on the lathe. Quote Link to comment
HRH
Holy crap, I think that's actually too short, isn't it? Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
YOUR RIGHT!!!! I just measured the 510 LCA pivot to pivot and it 22''. The Fiat might just be a winner. Looked at the smart car racks and they are diffentley narrower but where you attach the colum looks to be almost in the center of the rack. Couldn't find any soild dementions though, will keep looking. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Wow, 20.75. It is relatively easy to lengthen most rack's pivot to pivot, as the pivots screw on. Can you post pictures? Datsun 1200 is [Edit:] 18.6 inches LCA pivot to pivot. Edited January 24, 2012 by ggzilla Quote Link to comment
HRH
Something else to consider, how easily can you get a Fiat X19 rack? I don't have any here at NAPA, while I can still get the Chevette rack and pinions fairly easily. Still east coast though. Quote Link to comment
bonvo
ive never done a rack in a datsun but i have an idea for one, look for a first generation subaru brat they are a little narower then datsuns and they use a rack and pinion parts are cheap to Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
I'll look into the sube rack dimensions, good call. I don' have the rack so don' have any picks. I did find one that I might just get and I will post picks of it compared to the x member. Quote Link to comment
HRH
Interesting, didn't know the brats used racks. I'll check the Chevette one when it comes in, but I'll see if there's still a Brat rack available at work. Quote Link to comment
Jekyl.Hyde.Kustoms
I had an x/19 and my Dad has a couple. Parts aren't very hard to find at all. Quote Link to comment
HRH
Hmm, seems odd Canada would have more on the Fiat side. Can you get racks for them up there? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
You can buy rebuilt racks for X1/9 right here in USA. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
Well like i said it was before the internet.....Even the most obscure part on the least produced car can be found without even leaving your house.. Now... Quote Link to comment
