ggzilla
Thanks. Geo Metro rack ... The pivot points are at +/-23" Too long then for a 510. You can easily lengthen them (the pivot points screw in), but to shorten involves cutting and modifying the rack. Here's the Metro ends, you can see there is no room to shorten the pivot points. Well maybe you could shorten 1/2 inch??? Quote Link to comment
HRH
I've decided this project will require much more time than I thought, so thinking I'm going to renew my interest in putting the 210 box back together and putting that in the 510 instead. I'm already running out of time to do stuff to the car before Canby if I really want to drive it there. Quote Link to comment
DRIVEN
Too long then for a 510. You can easily lengthen them (the pivot points screw in), but to shorten involves cutting and modifying the rack. Really? I measured it at about 1/2" wider than the LCA points in my car -- pretty close. Isn't a control arm length equal to the length of the tie rod and on the same plane horizontally considered ideal to optimize geometry? Here's the Metro ends, you can see there is no room to shorten the pivot points. Well maybe you could shorten 1/2 inch??? I was actually referring to the overall width. There is plenty of room to shorten the rod between the pivot and the threads or cut it off and graft in the 510 outer tie rod end. Sorry if I was unclear. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
The control arm length is minor. You can easily lengthen or shorten the tie rods to match. More important is the length pivot-to-pivot. 1/2" wider will give you bump steer. But perhaps you could grind 1/4" off each end of the rods and still have enough to screw back on and be safe. DRIVEN
s12 rack Was there a manual version or were they all power? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
S12 (1984-1988 200SX) came with power steering option or manual steering. The V6 model did not offer manual. Quote Link to comment
DAT510
does anyone have measurements on the S110 steering rack? if not i'll measure it tomorrow. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Please measure the pivot-to-pivot length, which is far more important than the overall width. Quote Link to comment
DAT510
Please measure the pivot-to-pivot length, which is far more important than the overall width. Can i measure it while it's still in the car? and the pivot i presume is the end that looks like a ball joint? Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
The width from center of joint to center of joint inside the dust boots - the inside joints of the tie rods. Quote Link to comment
DAT510
I went to measure it and it wasn't rack and pinion.. it was instead a mechanical set up.... still it the steering box intrigued me.. what if you could swap this one for the 510 and have power steering? looks similar to this Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Looks similar to the 620 steering gearbox. But doesn't look like power steering. Mechanical rack & pinion steering gearbox is what I want. No power steering for me as more complicated which means less reliable. Quote Link to comment
DAT510
It's not that exact one... i'll snap a pic tomorrow. Quote Link to comment
BoostinBen
Just got a measurement for an Mk1 rack from a buddy... 525mm ..21" pivot to pivot. I think I might give that a go, but I will have to verify that info when I go check it out in person .. Quote Link to comment

paramedicopace
Smartcar rack looks to be the smallest rack i've seen but have no measurements found. MK1 is a great idea as well. Power would be nice and make the 510 just that much easier to slam around. The search will continue. Quote Link to comment
