paramedicopace
The smart car is electronic assist. I'll look into what's all involved. Not to much out there on smart car steering from what google magic has popped up. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
In Japan they are using electric assist from suzuki & toyoda. Non rack-n-pinion. Uses the stock 510 steering box Quote Link to comment
BoostinBen
Here is the MK1 rack ... its 20.5" without any pivot mounted.. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
So close! the 510 LCA pivot to pivot and it 22'' If we can find tie rods that have the pivots only 3/4 inch from end, the Fiat box will work. Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
You could almost make that work with hiems on the ends if you could match the thread pitch. They could put it dead on. Thanks for the pic. Quote Link to comment
paramedicopace
Looking through some MK1 forums and guys that want power steering and don't want to track down a MK1 power steering rack (i guess they are hard to come by) us the toyota paseo rack and it's a perfect fit. If i did my math right this will work and still give you a 1/4'' on each side before being to wide. I'm going to buy one of these racks and mock it up and will give further on this.
