Rhapakatui
P.s. thank you datsunfreak for texting me so that I could have the option of pointing out my stupid mistake in public. Quote Link to comment
KlassicMotion
I just assumed you had put them back in for the pic, or the pic was before you took them out. You know what they say about assumptions..... What did you do then, remove the ball joint bolts? Quote Link to comment
Rhapakatui
Yup. I thought they seemed awfully small, but what do I know. Quote Link to comment

freetheoranges
Can I replace my blown 510 struts with 280zx struts and then add washers to lengthen it? Or are the strut casings different widths? Quote Link to comment
Rhapakatui
I'm pretty sure they're the same width. I know the 710 is. They're quite a bit shorter though. I think 1 1/2" or so. That's just from reading. I have no experience with a 510 whatsoever. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Can I replace my blown 510 struts with 280zx struts and then add washers to lengthen it? Yes. You just need to make a spacer to go inside the strut housing to take up the slack. Or are the strut casings different widths? Everything except a 1200 uses the same diameter strut housing. As well as almost all Toyotas, a lot of VWs, etc. 1 Quote Link to comment
freetheoranges
Why haven't i done this sooner lol! Struts ordered. Also picked up the last 510 strut on rockauto... Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Also picked up the last 510 strut on rockauto... Why? Quote Link to comment
freetheoranges
Why? For... umm.... nostalgia? I purchased it and then I was thinking... "you know what, I bet ZX struts fit with a spacer" after rereading previous threads for the sixth time. EDIT: RA error in my favor. No charge, no part. Quote Link to comment
Datzun510
Anyone in the orange county california area that can do this for me? I just picked up the Z struts... Quote Link to comment
freetheoranges
If this actually works out somehow... regret and happiness... Quote Link to comment

Rhapakatui
So, I'm cutting down the ZX top hats to fit in the 710. One of the 710 ones is kinda roached because of the giant wallowed out holes in the shock towers. Do people normally do anything to reinforce the edges after cutting, or is it fine to just cut them off and leave it flat? Quote Link to comment

I ran mine for a few miles with no issues.... Had I not swapped over to the T3 coilover setup, I was planning to go back and weld a ring around the edge. Quote Link to comment
Rhapakatui
Thanks.. I've been doing some testing, and I think I'll eventually go to coilovers. Til then, I'll just leave em flat. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
I left them flat. Never had an issue. Not even in my crash. Quote Link to comment
1969 dime
I'm putting 280zx struts in my 510. I can't find the bolts that bolt the strut to the caliper. I don't have old ones to compare. I've tried a few parts websites without luck. I've called 2 Nissan dealers in Canada and 1 in the US. I've checked the local wreckers. Does anyone know a good source for these bolts? Or the bolt dimensions? I believe they are m12x??. I think they have a shoulder but I don't know the length of the bolt or the shoulder. I've seen some on EBay but can't confirm if they're the correct ones. Any help would be great. Quote Link to comment

1969 dime
I would like to keep the 69 510 struts as a complete assembly to sell if possible. I think these bolts (m12x1.25x40mm) were used on newer Nissans, just not sure which ones. I did this to my last 510 but those were the days when you could find Datsuns at the auto wreckers. KlassicMotion
Since I used the 1" RCA/ bump steer spacers, which is an a must when shortening the housing, I just went to Fastenal and bought 4 class 10.9 m12x1.25 bolts 60mm long. Quote Link to comment
1969 dime
Thank you! Much appreciated. I looked at fastenal but couldn't find them. I'll look again. Its the unthreaded (shoulder) portion I was unsure of. (I think 20mm ish). I'm also using RCA's. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Oreilly and NAPA sell bolts like that. Quote Link to comment
