Rustina 510
Is there a 6 speed tranny, any tranny that has 6 foward gears that will bolt onto a L20b ? Quote Link to comment
izzo
not that bolts on, requires some modding! Quote Link to comment
wayno
Is there a 6 speed tranny, any tranny that has 6 foward gears that will bolt onto a L20b ? That transmission is some kind of hybrid, if you look close the whole thing is tilted badly, i am assuming your talking about the body drop thread, and it has an abnormally long tail area where the rev. and 5th gears are. wayno Quote Link to comment
Pedro
Never heard of an L series 6 speed. Only thing I can think is a s15 6 speed with a l series bellhousing, otherwise must be off another manufacturers car. Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
You could bolt a l series housing from a zx. Or truck to a 6 speed sr trans . But you would have to get the front bearing race bore out to fit . And shorten the drive line. Quote Link to comment
Z-train
What is the purpose of a 6 speed trans? Quote Link to comment
H5WAGON
That's like asking why these Amps go to eleven....:D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbVKWCpNFhY Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
Lol spinal tap " this one goes to 11" I don't want a 6 speed, I was just curious. On another note i am getting my 5 speed today after work! Super cool, just need a throw bearing and clutch fork. You have one for me mr dime? Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
I bet a 6 speed would be nice if you where running 444's Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
A six speed would allow closer spacing of the gear ratios. (I don't mean closer together physically) For example a 280zx non turbo 5 speed ratios are 1st... 3.062 2nd.. 1.858 .... 39.3% drop in RPMs into 2nd 3,360 @6K 3rd... 1.308 .... 29.6% drop in RPMs into 3rd 4,260 @6K 4th... 1.000 .... 23.5% drop in RPMs into 4th 4,590@ 6K 5th... 0.773 .... 22.7% drop in RPMs into 5th 4,638 @ 6K Lets imagine a six speed with the same 1st and 5th gear ratios so two cars are identical at take off and top speed. 1st... 3.062 2nd... 2.296 25% drop in RPMs into 2nd 4,500 @ 6K 3rd.... 1.722 25% drop in RPMs into 3rd 4,500 @ 6K 4th.... 1.291 25% drop in RPMs into 4th 4,500 @ 6K 5th.... 0.968 25% drop in RPMs into 5th 4,500 @ 6K 6th.... 0.773 20% drop in RPMs into 6th 4,800 @ 6K It can be seen that 2nd gear is reached at the same 1st gear RPMs but there is less of an RPM drop with the six speed meaning that the motor is revved higher and is presumable making more hp as it starts out in 2nd. This would be very important to turbo motors to keep the turbo spooled and also a camed motor that only produces hp higher in the RPM range. This is a totally hypothetical gear set exaggerated for effect. Some of these ratios may not be possible in practice. Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
Well, there is an adapter for L series to a Z32 5-speed. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/27383-no-more-ls1-v8/ And some have converted the Z32 to the Z33 transmission... http://www.twinturbo.net/net/viewmsg.aspx?forum=technical&msg_id=1000850 So... HRH
I could use a 6 speed. The combination of the goofy shift dogleg and 4.11 gearing makes for a good workout of rowing. It's also why my 0-60 is slow, but my 0-80 is fast! ;) 60 for me with the rear gearing is 5300 rpm in 3rd. I like the torque factor of the low gears though. May eventually move to a truck 5 speed with L bellhousing to get a more highway friendly 5th. Quote Link to comment

Stupid_fast
so... thats definitely not a z33 6 speed in that truck I didn't explain. When he put the LS1 into that other S30 he pulled out the old L28 and a 5-speed from a Z32. Scroll down a bit to see those pics. Quote Link to comment
Rustina 510
I just picked up a 280z 5 speed for my l20 motor, can't wait to get this beast running! Quote Link to comment
