1972 Datsun 510 suprise

Recommended Posts

Hey Ratsuners, Victory and I wanted to bumrush a 2 door 510 for the BBQ get together this last weekend, so here is the story.

We bought this car a few months ago in San Rafael. The owner before us did alot of work to the car, but the car still needs a lot of work. The engine bay was mostly stripped, the inner fender wells were stitch welded from the under side instead of the inside of the engine bay. Battery tray was removed, but not smoothed out, and count less holes were already welded close. Now that the rains are here I knew it would just sit and rust. Victory was excited to do some sandblasting. 500 pounds of sand and a raw canvas later we had something to work with.

DP40LF, this is a great epoxy primer, and works well when you do not want to sand the entire area again. You can spray over this primer without sanding for 7 days. I don't wait that long but a day or 2 is great.

I sand the DP with 320 dry to eliminate sand scratches from the filler work.

Here you have it a painted engine bay in less then a week

I sprayed the base then added red metal flake and 3 coats of clear. The red is a color i will be painting a 2 tone on a wagon with and wanted to see it sprayed.

Now maybe someone will see potential and buy this lost pup and put him back on the road.

Yes Cody we can take care of that ding, no biggy

I sometimes think about leaving a car alone, then Victory comes along a says "hey this would look nice done and painted, I'll help" and off we go. It's like a drug, but it's very cool when you see something on the road that could of been in a scraper.

Update

So Victory just wants to see this car done, WOW. OK So that means alot of work for both of us. However we are not attempting to take a year or create a $5000 paint job. Something clean and enjoyable.

On with random parts, hood next, here is what we started with. Ugly rusty, but very straight.

Sand lots of sanding, most all filler gets hand sanded, along with most primer, actually most the sanding i do is by hand. Unless it doesn't have to be perfect.

So new news, Tiki has taken another 510 off our hands. We have to make it somewhat good for exterior conditions.

We will be spraying it low sheen black and finishing the interior of the hood and trunk lid. When you open the hood, all u will c is pretty, sleeper.
