Fast720
Hi .........it's been a while ...........super busy Well I had some time to work on my truck and my wife's Miata sprung a serious oil leak, which turned into pulling the engine to remove the pan , while I am in there did the clutch and lightened the flywheel 3 Lb's , also picked up a nice 4 into 2 into 1 stainless header. I am going to push hard to get Blue Thunder back together. I bought a Miller Spectrum 375 X-Treme Plasma cutter, tested it today cut a piece of Angle iron 6x6x1/2 inch thick .just like butter. very excited to get back to work on Blue Thunder, the Plasma should help speed up the Fabrication, not to mention spicing up the creativity !!!! Built a little shelf for it to stay out of harms way. A couple of pics of the MX5 and the Plasma. Stay Tuned for Blue Thunder updates ,oh and when is Canby ? always good to have a dead line !!!!!!! Fast720
Hi Made some changes in the shop, this should help a lot, with all the parts I have to make, driveshaft adapter ,shorten the half shafts, lots of suspension spacers and fuel tank bits. Before After 1 Quote Link to comment
Kirden
You're doing an amazing job with this truck. I usually dislike the 720s because the 521s and 620s seem to have so much more style, but the quality of your work and the attention to detail has made this very unique. Quote Link to comment
Fast720
Hi made a tool on the lathe, a dimple die , first test was sweet, I have a few things to make and with dimples would be way hotter. going to start working on Blue Thunder again this weekend, hoping to have it road worthy for Canby , no paint or interior ,I will be pushing it to make the dead line ,fist thing on the list is to get the chassis finished , suspension, steering, brakes , so stay posted for updates !!!!! The hole is 1 1/4 inch , I might make a couple of different sizes. This was a quick test , on a real part I would clean up the hole edge before pressing the dimple. 2 Quote Link to comment
Fast720
I forgot to add the samples of Dimples, someone asked me where do you put them and why ? Dimples are for lightening and straightening panels or brackets . I plan on some on my fan shroud , fuel cell brackets, rear diffuser , gussets etc. here are some samples of Dimples. 3 Quote Link to comment
JoeCool
This truck just keeps getting more awesome! And I dig the "Blue Thunder" name. Loved the movie and TV show, although I think Airwolf was more bad ass... Quote Link to comment
Kirden
Why dimples? Because BAMF'in race truck! I'm seriously looking at the VG option now. I already have a wrecked pathy out at the farm, but I'm still scared shitless when it comes to fabrication. I'll live through you and dream till I can grow the balls to put my welding to the test. Fast720
back to working on Blue thunder , I made a discovery last weekend that sucked , my shocks don't like to be upside down ,the gas gets trapped and they lockup , so I had to find a way to flip them over or buy another pair , I went with flipping them , sure glad I test thing before welding everything completely. Also got feed up with trying to hold the hub in the right place while trying to work, so I made a tool that go's in my floor jack to hold the hub , this makes life a lot easier , I can cycle the suspension and check my bump steer also. Sure like having the lathe for making bushings and other cool stuff !!!! 3 Quote Link to comment
Fast720
rear suspension and frame fish plates , need to order some tires for these 20 inch wheels , so I can build some suspension arm stops. I will weld the rest out when the box comes off. Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
You might consider solids mounting the coil over end. The bushing will allow deflection and you'll probably end up bending and possibly snapping the shaft. Just an observation. Josh- Quote Link to comment
Fast720
Hey Josh I am not sure what your saying about "solids mounting the coil over end" the shock shaft is pretty skookum , also need access to the rebound dial on the top .I will cycle it once I get the lower end fastened , and see how much deflection there is , the shock travel is very little maybe 2 inches ? Thanks for your input. Fast720 1 Quote Link to comment
Josh K.
Yeah my concern would be the rubber bushings on the shock end allowing it to flex away from centerline and then bend in half. If you had a steel tube that slipped over the shock end you could essentially make it one shaft. I'm sure you'll test it thoroughly and I'm looking forward to seeing the results. Fast720
Hi I was looking for some tires for my 20 inch wheels and saw these and had to have them ,I think the look way better and are much lighter, the fronts are 19 X 8 and give me more room in the fenders for turning , and the rears are 19 X 9.5 ,so now I will order some tires for these wheels, fronts I was thinking 245/35/19 and rear 275/35/19, once they are mounted I will be able to finish the rear set-up with bump stops etc.I have been working on the steering , modifying the frame rail for my weird steering shaft return gear box .also started thinking about fuel tank & spare space saver tire. 2 Quote Link to comment

diesel_rat
Awesome inspiration! I am planning a rat style chopped streched cab diesel 720 so seeing your work gives me hope. How did you get the OEM door handles to work again? Also what frame mods have you made? As I am planning to bob the crap out of mine and run the wheels tight to the cab like this one I am sure you have seen before. Quote Link to comment
Fast720
Hi the tires arrived and I got them installed , will be hitting it hard this weekend , stay tuned Total Stoked ................. 2 Quote Link to comment
Fast720
Hi Diesel Rat , I basically moved the door handles ( complete ) from the back of the passenger side to the front of the drivers side and the from the back of the drivers door to the front of the passenger door , so the latches and lock would work , still had to make striker boxes and mount's for the hoops to bolt too , there is a bunch of pics at http://www.datsunminitruckin.com/supercharged-vg30-720_topic920_page3.html that explains it . With your Bobbed 620 you can park with the Smart cars Quote Link to comment

Fast720
Hi at last some work on Blue Thunder , made up the steering shaft, and now have to fab up a new section of frame to accommodate the new rack setup , going to really push over the next few months to get this back on the road. 1 Quote Link to comment
