What is this thing??

Hi Everyone, I removed this from the engine bay firewall, I cannot find it in the repair manual, Do I have to have this? It looks pretty ragged. :confused:

How big is that? It doesn't look like a stock part, but more like something home-made.

What was it hooked up to? I do not recall seeing anything like that in any of my three 521 pickups, or the 520 or 320 I used to own.

My first thought is that it looks like the Doomsday Machine from the original Star Trek TV show

Looks like a fuse of some kind, but missing the end plate.

It's the motion detector from an old school car alarm.

It has a pendulum inside and a contact point on top. Maybe if the truck flips upside down the points close and it shuts off the engine electrics??

 

 

The cardboard was falling apart so I just removed some of it

Well I just did some research and I think that this truck was used in W.W.II here in the States by a spy, He or she would drive around Military bases and get information and then pretend to breakdown, he or she would lift the hood and pretend to be fiddling with something. This device was used for sending radio signals by Morris code back to Toyko. The spy must have forgot to remove it after the wars end. :P

It actually looks like an original Ungo Box motion sensor from the early 80's, They were state of the art back then. (there's probably only a handful of people on here that have ever even heard of Ungo box. :unsure:)

......... and my 76 620 had one on it when my uncle had it. My father removed it back in the 80's since it wasn't working properly when we received the truck from him.

Ha ha, that's funny! yep its a "motion" sensor for an alarm as others have mentioned. Brings back memories! I put one on my old 79 620 back in the day! ha..ha.. forgot all about those.

Mine doesn't look anything like that.lol. Yours looks like it is made of metal? I remember that my moms truck had this same motion detector on it from the dealer. But I am pretty sure it was not connected. I know we never used it. Thanks for putting it here for us to see. :cool:
