I took my Datsun 620 to the Nissan Dealer

Recommended Posts

This story started last weekend when I was changing the oil and filter in my '77 620 KC. When I went to install the oil drain plug in the L20B, I noticed the plug's copper seal was no good. I used a plug/seal from my spare L18 to solve the problem.

Yesterday, I went to NAPA Auto looking for a replacement copper seal, but all they could sell me was an incorrect copper flatwasher. So I thought it was a long shot, but I went to Performance Nissan here in Everett to ask for one.

I spoke to Doug of the Parts Dept., who knew the correct P/N 11026 61000 right off the top of his head! He checked the computer, and said yes, they still stock them in the system, but had none in the dealer. He said he could order one in. Next, he said: "Wait a minute, I think I have one in my lunch box..." Your lunch box, why would you have one in your lunch box?" I said. Doug explained how his brother had recently rebuilt an L18 engine for someone else, and had received one extra seal in the engine rebuild parts kit.

It turns out Doug owns a 510. Doug sold me the seal for $3.48, and would pay himself back when the ordered part came in. He also told me to come back again if I needed help with anything else. Wow, that's pretty darned good customer service for a thirty two year old truck!

Thanks, Doug!

Thanks, guys. I almost felt like I should have parked the Ratsun out back so as not to adversely affect Nissan sales figures, but awww, what the heck?

I asked Doug, since he owns a 510, if he knows of or was a member of any Nissan/ Datsun forums. He said yes, but he spends all day on the computer as part of his job, and prefers not to during his time off. He did say that he's been working for Nissan since the 70's, starting out at a dealership in Seattle.

After a while the computer gods kick in though. The last time I took my 411 into the dealer the service manager keyed "1967 RL 411" into the [Nissan provided software equiped] computer, smiled and informed me that Nissan insisted I was driving a Volkswager 411 "Variant". We both knew better! When the manufacturer "bans" you from his computer you know you have something "different". Thankfully the parts manager and most of his staff are old timers and know my car on sight.

The dealers out here are my last line of searching! Rudy at Surf City Nissan is the man for looking up old part numbers- hard to find parts can sometimes be tracked down through them AND, they can check local dealers' databases to for back-stocked parts. they will sometimes tell you which dealers have what you need, and will have them shipped or you can drive if they're close!

Moparvwfreak: Yes, there was a 50th Anniversary Z Car sitting in the showroom. Very nice!

Just for kicks i went to the nissan dealer looking for vent window seals for my 521. I just handed the parts guy the part numbers without saying a word. He just looked up at me and said, "We're going a ways back, I don't have it but I know a guy that might have something." He gave me the number to a datsun specialist in boulder, "This guy restores and parts out datsuns, I bought my 510 off of him a few years back."

It usually seems the guys behind the parts counter at Nissan are pretty dedicated to their job, Even going as far as driving the history.

REAR wheel drive...?

Ummm...just maybe?

Skib is referring to a forum called RightWheelDrive.com, a forum for those who are into the sport of drifting. Right Wheel Drive equals Rear Wheel Drive, as opposed to Wrong Wheel Drive equals Front Wheel Drive. I hope I got that right.
