So, the combination speedo/tach has this little tiny LCD screen which may or may not be an odometer.

20230517_134249.thumb.jpg.97c0ecbfc10df86160604a10b8a6559f.jpg

On the off chance that it is not, I bought a 2" digital speedo (which definitely has an odometer) and made a plate to mount it where the fuse box used to live.

20230517_132706.thumb.jpg.096e1e4300a386b81aabf1bc5894d165.jpg

I also bought some 1/4-20 nutsert/rivnut things...

20230517_123314.thumb.jpg.a2018411b87416e371527fab9cdd228d.jpg

so I could put them here...

20230517_123328.thumb.jpg.dd05922e7b631a1d833f62aed5c8c350.jpg

and mount a coolant expansion tank.

As mentioned when I got this radiator, it is 3" shorter than the stock unit.

20230503_150631.thumb.jpg.50bee4976b32f60542a7977ec32ac7e3.jpg

This left a 3" gap at the bottom.

20230517_140151.thumb.jpg.32d2a34d4e8f94febde00dc6fec22cb5.jpg

So I lifted this shield up...

20230517_140145.thumb.jpg.90f55a15232a50906977b494c9e8b9d6.jpg

and zip-tied it to the lower radiator bracket.

20230517_145910.thumb.jpg.b5909042f2d117ece3027c5794201e5c.jpg

Then I made a duct/shield to route the hot air from the oil cooler away from the radiator.

20230517_145808.thumb.jpg.ccb65782b9e83fb2381a84f72315c5b8.jpg

20230517_150412.thumb.jpg.8b4741251650faa7b61caf8f145eea97.jpg

20230517_150436.thumb.jpg.1058bc69f22e95dcf14a828450fe6bb2.jpg

We installed the upper radiator hose (and have an idea how we're going to do the lower), but took no pictures.

I did take pictures of the three NEW kittens that showed up today though!

They are impossibly cute.  I can hardly stand it!

I used some conveyor belting to fill a similar gap and help route the airflow where I wanted it

We bought several 4'x8' sheets of black plastic several years ago.  We've been using it for all kinds of stuff.

Update: Even if it IS an odometer, the screen is so tiny (and I'm so old and blind) that I want the bigger odometer.

Am I trying to justify a potentially stupid purchase?

SHUT UP!  It's my van!

While I have never actually needed one, I want an under-hood starter bump switch.  So, I bought this...

20230524_154614.thumb.jpg.cb9c58ee2fe8e1f7be4ca7a9828aae53.jpg

Made this...

20230524_154630.thumb.jpg.23107e135f6f738e836ddc9af7f51cfc.jpg

And installed them here...

Then I got serious about stringing wires... ok, I routed a few wires to, more or less, their final locations.  But I took no pictures of that.

Well, the mangy ass water pump finally got to me...

Ooooooooooooooo!  Pretty!

20230524_173803.thumb.jpg.17f7924c36357949b2d7f2d445628161.jpg

And in place...

20230524_181443.thumb.jpg.f0a182ef28e10b8d836ea71849a1fa2e.jpg

And with the alternator and belt back on...

Now we just need to decide between a "Ribbed for Her Pleasure" lower radiator hose (easier, but ugly), or a molded 90° hose (gotta do research to find one, but much prettier).  Lazy Tim is "OK with" ribbed, aesthetic Tim wants John to find him the prettier hose!

Ok, time for Tim to get "cancelled."

Does that pulley look like it has Down's Syndrome to anyone else?

Sorry, I've resigned myself to the whole "Going to Hell" thing a long time ago.

That pulley is very strange.  Is it plastic?  It looks like it in the photo.

It is steel. It does have a fresh coat of paint on it because the bolt on bit in the center (that we are not using) was bare. Perhaps my paint job makes it looks plastic?

Indeed. But with as much stuff as we've removed/relocated, it is now front and center when you pop the hood. It was worth changing out. 😁

John pointed out to me that I have not shown y'all a long shot of under the hood, so...

20230527_110551.thumb.jpg.b7c232cb548079b84ac1d85699c70c9a.jpg

That is how visible the water pump is without the fan and shroud.

Also, this shot is making me consider* aluminum radiator hoses... because racecar.

*And by "consider," of course I mean... well, the parts are on their way.

We zip-tie loomed the rear... um, loom of the wiring harness...

20230527_103956.thumb.jpg.98ee8edf1b99473a01381a164f1ede34.jpg

Then routed it under the van...

20230527_110606.thumb.jpg.b089c1d55b99cfb5d3fcd0e7dd02901f.jpg

John secured it to the rear brake line but we didn't take pictures.

Then we.. ok, John dropped the fuel tank so we could finger out how to backdate it to a carburetor fuel pump and mount the fuel level sender.

20230527_132011.thumb.jpg.9e993471ea94c47c23ca6bb862c7cc51.jpg

We removed and disassembled the nearly brand new fuel pump unit...

20230527_115814.thumb.jpg.5d4b2de4503f6aaa1f3de606ba2c5e98.jpg

Discombobulated the pressure regulator (round stainless thing on the bottom of the next picture)...

20230527_115808.thumb.jpg.8b53b8d9a35129bad1f36308546f023b.jpg

And then soldered in a pickup tube...

20230527_124334.thumb.jpg.6de40df2517fdf3fd616abdda9d57052.jpg

20230527_124325.thumb.jpg.6d8500c2a6c301d80b2aed675da54f2e.jpg

Finally, we setup the length and stroke of the sending unit so we can mount it in the tank...

20230527_131956.thumb.jpg.45d15afe0af673a687a1a39d1ffe6ed8.jpg

The sender will go in the small hole while the pickup tube will be in the larger one...

20230527_132011.thumb.jpg.6e1a958364a7ab23c0446f943c087bd1.jpg

And yes, I know that's the same picture as above.  I forgot to take any others of the tank out of the van.

Now that I see it, I see why.  I think you should now remove all the gold paint and go for gold plating instead.

You can go racecar / lowrider hybrid 🙂

So here's the Hugh Jass® 35 gallon fuel tank...

20230529_135345.thumb.jpg.989334c6383c2bf189890c8bf82cdcc8.jpg

I installed the fuel level sender (after tearing the gasket and making a new one, Grr!).  You will notice that I remembered to add a ground wire...

20230529_135122.thumb.jpg.0cce844758ab7a4b804855cd491084a9.jpg

And I installed the modified pickup assembly...

20230529_135126.thumb.jpg.c307e636c0569b13783fe7155ca1cef4.jpg

Which makes the top of the tank look like this...

20230529_135114.thumb.jpg.a499cab2e76f5c3e7afd1696977e595e.jpg

Then I was looking at other things I could do.  I decided the bare metal and rusty bolt looked like ass, so I risked the Wrath of John and hit our recently fabricated dipstick bracket with some paint.

20230529_141507.thumb.jpg.6a771a0e7be830d96761ac94a93d26aa.jpg

Then, since I had success with the spray, I decided to scrape, vacuum, and Zero-Rust the battery tray.

20230529_143019.thumb.jpg.a3e419b785e7acda672cdaee97c37bfe.jpg

By that point, I was hot and sweaty enough to call it a day and go home.

Most of the bits arrived to make the aluminum radiator hoses...

20230531_161841.thumb.jpg.f81277fc8db365720a4070e0e21fe634.jpg

After an initial test fit, I trimmed one leg of the 90° silicone coupler...

20230531_162521.thumb.jpg.1f59e013e489138b7f0c691471eb2420.jpg

And stuck it on the thermostat neck...

20230531_162532.thumb.jpg.54dc6087ac43703bb70321421d513545.jpg

The 45° silicone coupler got stuck on the radiator...

20230531_162553.thumb.jpg.ee77f3523e204607ce6b544f477d9b2d.jpg

And the straight section of aluminum pipe went twixt the two...

20230531_162633.thumb.jpg.854f587b5ae46006d5cbdbb7ef86fed9.jpg

20230531_162642.thumb.jpg.1c3c6f439f3246c600c8dc1d03e4b903.jpg

John put clamps on them, but we took no pictures of that.  Oops.

The aluminum 90° bend goes something like this...

20230531_162728.thumb.jpg.702e25f661701f4ec1b8e882ecf24551.jpg

And will get attached with the two straight pieces of silicone arriving tomorrow.

After grokking that for a while, I asked what was stopping us from making the holes for the filler thingies in the scuttle.  Nothing, apparently...

20230531_173201.thumb.jpg.fc3b53c2079acbd36f79ee17331fa316.jpg

20230531_173209.thumb.jpg.1f61bae99bb293d815476be45df45853.jpg

I am really chuffed with how those turned out!

One thing I noticed is the straight piece has no lip or anything like the 90° does....

Not sure if that's important or not...

I was hoping no one would notice.  I put a bead roller in my shopping cart, but decided $60 was a bit steep for two beads.

A good idea while it's clean and you have access to it, is to liberally coat it with silicone to ward off the evil rusty connection...

Yeah, but all the better to seal that up with LRRH

More silicone hose arrived today...

20230602_155134.thumb.jpg.09e00b4380396e81ee87669f3163711e.jpg

I trimmed one of them...

20230602_155259.thumb.jpg.0d8529819c3fe5439285813ee204d93e.jpg

Shoved the aluminum 90° in it and it on the water pump...

20230602_155405.thumb.jpg.73327461c7a7d6617f0b795a12efc189.jpg

Trimmed the other one to go between the elbow and radiator...

20230602_155627.thumb.jpg.ad002eacb50f9e054f0d4834601249b2.jpg

Then hose clamped them all down...

20230602_160243.thumb.jpg.25e7cb5056d55885f1593defd3795925.jpg

And from the other side...

20230602_160230.thumb.jpg.6970417f7fe66ec6d23564cf1272d06a.jpg

I also got some small silicone hose to link the radiator to the surge tank...

20230602_155148.thumb.jpg.213571c2c18d942c0bc2ecebe288ce34.jpg

And the surge tank overflow...

20230602_155154.thumb.jpg.acfc6907a17ba55694263d4c4261e52d.jpg

I'm still not 100% sure where I'm going to route that though.

And, here's a shot of the filler/bleeder thingies with the hood closed...

20230602_153317.thumb.jpg.af122ce07109abe413ccf0ed73883e3c.jpg

And that's totally not my finger in the shot.  I think it's the Solway Firth Spaceman.
