Electric cooling fans - Two pullers or One pusher?

Looking at wiring up some electric fans for a KA24E swap with a Koyo aluminum radiator.

 

I can do two SPAL 7.5" pullers @ 440CFM - would like this so I can put a condenser up front.. might still have space.. just being cautious.

 

Or

 

A single SPAL 12" pusher @ 1230 CFM.

 

 

Seems like the air flow of the single 12" pusher would be enough.. but concerned about space up front if adding AC.

 

 

Any thoughts welcome.

I would say pullers. Less air in front/flowing and sucking through the rear.

 

 

Can you build a shroud as well?

 

Pusher is better than nothing but I would still believe any restriction is unwanted. Even something minimal like this.

 

I would probably only consider a pusher if space behind the radiator is at a premium.

Agree. Make sure air can't sneak in over the top of the rad with the hood down or around or under it. My 710 has a short rubber shield for this.  Block any holes in the rad support also. Air must have no choice but to go through rad. Vehicle motion should produce a passive high pressure on the front and a low pressure behind the rad while driving.

 

Definitely get a temp sensor and relays so everything is automatic.

I like to use the radiator out of the 95-99 Toyota Tercel.  It supports about 150hp and has 2 compact puller fans shrouded along with a compact overflow recirc tank build into the shroud.  Definitely order an adjustable temp fan controller along with a relay for each fan.

I use two puller fans from a Subaru. Normally they sit side by each but there wasn't the room, so I swapped the wires and ran one in front as a pusher. The overlap maybe 3-4". I use the lower return rad hose for a 240sx in line temp sensor and a dedicated relay fused to the battery. They turn on around 3/4 of the run range and also when the ignition is off to reduce heat soak..

Thanks for the input so far. Space behind the radiator is pretty tight. I would love to run a shroud of some sort but I don't know how feasible that will be. If I can find some fans that are low enough profile that might work.

I was able to fit 2 12"ebay fans behind the radiator but they didn't pull much air got hot easy. Swapped for the spal 10" and another ebay 10" and now I can sit at idle all day with no problem. its a tight fit behind the ebay radiator no shroud being used but im not sure about the koyo

I guess first thing I gotta do is get the new radiator and bolt it in. That will tell me how much room I've got to work with. The Koyo is the same size as the stock radiator, so it doesn't allow for much bigger than two 7.5" fans.

have not done this but maybe in the future and thinking if you had 2 fans and one goes out, then would one be okay to cool it till you get home?

I guess first thing I gotta do is get the new radiator and bolt it in. That will tell me how much room I've got to work with. The Koyo is the same size as the stock radiator, so it doesn't allow for much bigger than two 7.5" fans.

 

Another option is having Mike at A1 radiator make you one to your specs, that's what I'm doing on my 620, sell or keep the KOYO for the other dime.

I thought about that. I'm was going to have the radiator modified to move the inlets and outlets. That might help with the clearance to the water pump if the radiator is thinner.. but it won't change the opening on the front the car. Still allows for the same surface area for air to pass through.

 

I guess it would come down to price and quality of the custom radiator. Did he give you a quote?

For the record , I like the SPAL puller fan I snagged a bit ago (solid shroud that came with).....I do believe it to be a 7" of 7.5" (have to look)

No, I was going to take a 620 radiator to him to use as a template last Monday but with all the paint chaos I didn't get a chance, will do so next Monday, I'll let you know what he's charging me as soon as he quotes me ;)

Idk about the 7.5 but I can barely here the 10s on mine. I was thinking of adding a small light that will come on when the fans do

I have 2 10" pushers and are quiet, temp relay is a must, mine is adjustable ranging from 130° to 190°

You sure can't hear them when driving. I had a single large pusher from a VG Xterra before. When you parked it might come on and be noticed. Either way they are sure quieter than an L20B clutch fan!!!!  Fan noise is not a deal breaker.

I'll get a radiator figured out first, then move on to fitting fans. Might be able to do a 9" and a 7.5 or something.

So pullers have a hard time fitting. both my cars have pushers with no issues. The wagon I put 2 8" spal fans and it works like a champ, the truck i have a 12" spal pusher as well and the other part of the pushers that I like is it is a way cleaner set up.

I'll take some time after work today to measure the radiator with all the fans and shrouding.

 

The thickest part of the assembly is where ever the center of the fan motor is, so if you can mount it off center to keep it away from stuff, you probably can keep them pullers.

 

Puller configuration scientifically is best for airflow and logically makes sense.
