nvestor88
I'm noticing a have top off radiator every few days. Drivers side carpet damp, from coolant. Is there a heater hose on drivers side of 69 510? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Yes. The heater core has a hose on each side. A hose or the core itself are likely the leak. Quote Link to comment
nvestor88
Do they still make heater cores for these or NLA? Does dashboard have to be pulled? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Have your core rebuilt after pulled. 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Do they still make heater cores for these or NLA? Does dashboard have to be pulled? I don't believe the dash needs to be pulled. It's part of the heater assembly in the middle. It could be the heater core, or it could be the heater valve itself leaking. As mentioned the heater core can be rebuilt by any radiator shop. The valve is NLA, however there have been several posts on here showing how you can rebuilt it yourself with a few orings. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Occam's Razor. Simplest answer is usually the correct one. Hose to the head. Maybe rotted and needs replacing. Maybe the clamp or hose clamp needs tightening. Hoses will wear out faster than the heater core will. Much more likely that you will replace the hoses several times in the life of the car than the heater core. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
driver side is the valve. try closing the valve and maybe it stops leaking. But if still leaks then the core is leaky. do this cold and then hot. valve open then closed and see if leaks always crawl down there and really get a good look than looking from the driver seat in the up position. 1 Quote Link to comment
nvestor88
Where is the valve located Quote Link to comment
Kathos
Easiest thing to do is just get down there with a flash light. If the driver side is damp, get a flashlight down there and see if you can see signs of where its coming from. Once you know that you can move onto the next step. On the 710, I couldnt see the valve from the driver side of the engine, it was against the firewall. I had to remove some of the ducting from the heater core, and a few bolts later I could rotate the heater core assembly and see the valve. Theres a diagram of the heatercore on the 510 somewhere around here but I can't find it. Quote Link to comment
Draker
The valve is on the driver side, it's attached to the hardline that extends through the firewall. It's one piece. Again drivers side, though the firewall. Quote Link to comment
nvestor88
Thanks, saw some drips from the heater box, where the heater core sits. Looks original? What's the best way to bypass? Just plug the two lines that run into the heater core? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Yes just plugging those two lines works great. Quote Link to comment
nvestor88
Can members share their plugging method?part #'s would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Trim hose at head and lower rad inlet to a few inches and put suitable diameter bolts in the ends and secure with hose clamps. Quote Link to comment
nvestor88
Have members plugged the two lines with metal caps? Anyone know the sizes? I've heard 1/2 NPT fits the outlet on lower hose? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I would just pull a bolt from my parts stash, shove it in the hose and hose clamp it in. Just cut the hose down to an inch long. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The one I saw was shoved in so the hose was clamped to the unthreaded shank below the bolt head. Hell I've seen what looked like a piece of broom handle used also. (but it was on a chev....) Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Or just have your heater core repaired. 1 Quote Link to comment
