Cleopatra Jones
It would be amazing if someone had a tiny portable a/c even if it ran off one if them square 6V battery. My husband is thinking if some other ways to oump the air out better. We'll see what we can come up with. Still a work in progress. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
If you get an additional water pump and a heater core (ie a radiator) and pump/circulate ice water through the core, and run ducting from your cooler outlet to one side of the core/radiator, then you will have essentially a real AC unit. The air will come out much, much colder...but your ice will melt much, much faster. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
your ice will melt much, much faster. And no more cold air. Back to where I started. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
But at least it will melt while you're using it, not while it's sitting at the car show :P 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
It'll probably all melt while I'm sitting in traffic. I'm in LA. It takes an hour to go 3 blocks. Sigh. 1 Quote Link to comment
ol' 320
Matt: Just give in and make up a smaller prototype compressor. Your machining work on here looks impressive... I know you can do this! Seriously, if someone made a smaller diameter compressor that was shorter than a Sanden 507 and was less than $500, and I knew it worked and would stand a chance of being reliable, I would buy the very first one for sale. Of course, I would want a bracket to fit a KA24DE as well...:) Angela: Not to clog up Colourbox's thread here, but you should get a pro to install a new Sanden and a quality under dash a/c unit in you wagon and enjoy real comfort. But it will have to be a super clean install to live up to that fantastic interior. Colourbox: Since Matt is likely to drag his feet on building this compressor, which would likely be very popular (hint hint) AND have a market, I am depending on you to continue elevating the Ghetto Breeze product line toward maximum efficiency and its ultimate calling potential.... lol! Come on, Stanley deserves this extra effort so you can have more seat time in comfort. 3 Quote Link to comment

I know I may turn as blue as my interior or possibly die of heat stroke before that happens but I'm patient AND I'm rockin' my Ghetto Breeze Deluxe thanks to inspiration from  ColourBox 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
You'll have to direct your inquiries to the other Matt, since I'm not a machinist :P 1 Quote Link to comment
ol' 320
In that case I apologize, Matt. I guess I want to rope in the Matt from Cottage Grove that makes awesome efi manifolds and other CNC trickery .... Now if I can just remember his Ratsun handle;) Angela: That looks like quite the rig! Can you post a couple of pics of the inside of your Ghetto Breeze Deluxe? Do you have the cooler all the way in the back blowing forward when driving? If you do and it has a noticeable cooling effect all the way up front I am truly impressed! If I could get a similar Ghetto Breeze to drop temps 20-30 degrees I would be very satisfied, even if this only lasted an hour before re-icing. Colourbox: I hope you don't mind if your protege Angela posts a couple of additional pics here. Will both of you "Cooler" ladies be bringing your latest Ghettos to JCCS? You might could round up one more "entry" and see if MBT can get you your own custom accessory class set up for J-tin cars! 2 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
That would be mattndew76. Sorry to be such a disappointment...story of my life 2 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
I've got Stanley registered for JCCS so he should be there. Yeah Matt, total disappointment. I'm sure we'll do some more work on the Ghetto Breeze 600. It'll probably be hot again for JCCS. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I guess you could maximize your car's ability to 'hold the cold'. Window tint to reflect radiant heat, shades on the side windows, light color seat covers that don't absorb sunlight, insulation under the floor mats, (hot rad air and exhaust running under car) doors, and between roof (they get really hot) and headliner. Seal any air leaks. Have you thought of how astronauts stay cool? Make a seat cover to sit on with tubing sown in to circulate cold water. Rather than cool the entire car, just cool yourself. It would be great to meet Stanley at Canby... and you of course. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
Hey Angela how did the deluxe work for you? Mike, I do have those window screens to help block out the fireball that is the sun. My next project needs to be fixing the board backing the back seat. It's beginning to crumble. Then I would like to sound proof the car and if doing that it seals up and keeps the heat out all the better. I do want to get to Canby. It'll be great to meet finally meet you and all the other guys and gals. And maybe I'll have the cooling situation handled. 2 Quote Link to comment

Have only had one 4 hr run with it in the cargo area. I'm hoping to test it in the passenger seat next time or passenger floor (if it fits, that is) while driving the 4.5hrs to SWDP BBQ. Having it closer will likely make a difference. I tinted my windows but used only a side sun shade for the driver's side window. It's a 72 quart igloo ice chest I I filled just below the fan blades. I think it was a few degrees over 100 that day but the car stayed fairly comfortable...all things considered. It wasn't cold by any means but it was much more tolerable than having the windows down trying to catch a breeze. I have a good friend that made a cooling seat as Mike described with a bilge pump in an ice chest. He said I could use it so I might take him up on it. If he'll help me make one, I'll try to document it & share the results. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
Very cool. My husband has something in mind to maximize airflow. We'll have to work on it and see. I had the Ghetto Breeze 600 in the passenger seat with me and it's much better when it's blowing on you that's for sure. Need to work something out so we get the same with it in the back seat. 1 Quote Link to comment
Scgreen620
Try salt and ice will get colder and keep the ice- ice longer 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
Ok ya'll went junkyard diving this weekend as a couple of 210s popped up. First one I went to had a/c in it. Hey now! Spent a few hours pulling all the a/c elements. My husband helped man handle the parts out of there. Pretty sure he wants a divorce now. But I got a/c....sort of. I'll take everything to my mechanic after JCCS as I suspect it will take quite a bit of time to see if I've got everything and it all works. I'm thinking something will need to be rebuilt, remanufactured or something. This is exciting though. 3 Quote Link to comment
Seeker > 620 KC
"A few hours"? "my husband helped manhandle"... lmao! The guy deserves a friggin medal! He certainly proved his love yesterday! 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
He does deserve a medal. Pretty sure he wants to leave me now but at least I might get Stanley some a/c :) 2 Quote Link to comment
Seeker > 620 KC
He might not keep you warm at night anymore, but he'll get you cool in the future daytime??? That's one hell of a trade-off! And don't tell me Stanley's been in the family longer! lol 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
Stanley has been in the family longer :) And the husband realizes I love Stanley more and he's ok with it. At least he says so... We've been busy these last few weekends so haven't been able to see about modifying the Ghetto Breeze to something better. We got 6 weeks til showtime so hopefully we can get on it soon. 1 Quote Link to comment
Angela
Hey there colorbox, I really hope you get that A/C going. I'm rooting for ya. I just got back from a LONG, HOT weekend of near triple digit temps at the SWDP BBQ, then the Pomona Swap Meet using all I had with your Ghetto Breeze idea.... (72 Qt cooler), a cold, wet hankie around my neck & lots of fluids...I barely made it. Wagon did fantastic, I nearly passed out. I'm sorry to say that my "Deluxe" version of the Ghetto Breeze with large capacity cooler, more powerful, larger fan, & 40lbs of ice was no match for that long drive, the endless traffic & my new vinyl seats in that heat. Seeker & Keith gave me lots of ideas & HOPE that A/C is very possible. I'm drawing inspiration from you as well. Please keep us posted on your efforts & progress! -Angela 1 Quote Link to comment
Seeker > 620 KC
Currently for you and Colour, AC = Almost Cool. I like both your attitudes and patience on a new & unfamiliar project. Keep the faith! We'll get it to = AIr Conditioning for you too. After Colour's picking trek, I suggest lots of alcohol afterward for your support team members ;) 2 Quote Link to comment
hosestop@msn.com
I make custom AC hoses and aluminum tubing but save any old hose ends to pumps mostly, sometime unique at Sanden pump , also have Freon machine that also does r12 but very costly ! 1 Quote Link to comment
Cleopatra Jones
Angela, it would be amazing if that a/c worked. My mechanic was out promoting his other business and he just got back. I'll be working with him to see if there's anything I might need. One of the other mechanics I work with alot there says it looks like we got everything. I'm hopeful. Seeker, dude you ain't lying about needing those drinks. That was a long day. Hosestop, so what you're saying is if I need some hoses made I can holla acha :) Quote Link to comment
