A_Racing_Driver
So Its probably not a bad idea to do an oil change on my 521 lol, but what filter will work and oil? I feel like the books in the store don't go back to 1970 so what works? Also what oil should I use I live in Canada so the weather goes from pretty cold to hot. thanks Quote Link to comment
Ed-datsun521
It's a huge filter lol ask at the counter if not sure And oils dependes on the weather it's so nice here In Cali I could run some valvoline vr1 20w-50 racing oil if u want to be safe get a 10w-30 or even a 5w -30 it's all weather where u be located and is there snow Quote Link to comment
Rick-rat
FRAM filter number is PH 3639, cross reference for a better filter, Napa Gold, Wix, 10/30 should be fine Chevron Delo oil is good Napa number 1s 1512 Quote Link to comment
kelowg
Frame ph8a or whatever crosses. 5/30 cold weather. 10/30 otherwise Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I would suggest Delo. It's a little heavy as it's 15-40, but it has all the wonderful zinc additives that will keep your motor happy. And if your motor is tired at all, then the heavier oil will just be a bonus. datzenmike
To be clear do NOT use a fram filter. I think the Ford 4.9 liter inline six works and the chev small block. If you look, the threads for most all filters are the same just the placement of the flat rubber O ring is different, well other than those really small filters. I used to just find one that fits and was cheaper. But get a WIX or NAPA Gold you can't go wrong. Our cam and rocker arm needs lots of scuff protection. For this a zinc additive ZDDP is used. Today's cars use a roller rocker arrangement and catalytic converters that don't like the ZDDP level that is in the oil, so oil makers have been reducing the levels slowly over the years. I err on the side of caution and run 15W40 Shell Rotella T (Chevron Delo400 is similar) This is a 'light' diesel oil that is allowed the same high levels of ZDDP in the formula. I would not use any oil below 10W unless the temps are continuously sub zero -18C. Get a block heater for easier starts. Quote Link to comment
Elkie
I run shell 15w-40 diesel oil for the zddp additives like lockleaf and mike says. Quote Link to comment

I've owned commercial trucks my whole working career and have run nothing but Chevron Delo. I run it in my boat, motorhome, GM Yukon,VW, my motocross bikes and most importantly my '68 520! The only vehicle I don't run it in is my BMW, that gets strictly synthetic. As for your filter, I'm not sure. If you keep your oil changed when due, I don't think it really matters what filter you run. This is coming from someone who has changed their own oils/ filters for 30 years. Good Luck! datzenmike
I am starting to doubt the year, it is a j13 says right on the firewall what are some of the differences? I don't think it really matters what filter you run as long as it isn't a Fram. 1 Quote Link to comment
