Anderson521
Picked up a h190 from a 69 fairlady. They come stock with 3.7 gears so a huge jump from m the current 4.88s in the truck 1 Quote Link to comment
Anderson521
So started by pulling the old pins that hold the ebrake rod and unbolting the 4 nuts holding the backing plate to the housing and then finally moving to the brake lines 1 Quote Link to comment
Anderson521
The h190 will have 10 bolts around the outside and the h165 will have 8. Slide the axles out at least 3 inches and wiggle the gears free from the studs 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
Your going to have to change out the side gears, as the Roadster H190 has different axles than the 521. 1 Quote Link to comment

Anderson521
Bent up a piece of sheet metal and threw some paint on it, I'll be ordering the gauge soon. Electric style which is a pretty easy switched power, ground and gauge wire set up for my gm vehicle Speed sensor 1 Quote Link to comment
Anderson521
So to start my gear swap i began to disassemble my donor which was blown and had rusted a little and didn't want to separate. I Promptly threw it out the door 1 Quote Link to comment

Anderson521
Taking the bearing caps off After caps are off I massaged the gears out of the housing There's a pin holding the gear cluster together which incidentally cannot be slid out with the ring gear in place so those bolts gotta go. I used a chisel and a hammer to flatten the lock tabs I don't have any pics from here of the disassemble but make sure to keep an eye on the brass shims behind the gears, swapped out the small spline for the large, rebolt the ring gear then torque. and don't forget the lock tabs! 1 Quote Link to comment
Atomic
So my options are 1. Buy used tranny for 600 with warranty 2. Have shop rebuild for 500 with warranty 500 for only changing out that ball bearing or does it include something else too? 1 Quote Link to comment
Anderson521
500 for only changing out that ball bearing or does it include something else too?[/quo It's so pricey because these transmissions are a bitch to take apart and yes it was only for the ball bearings, I grabbed a replacement at a pick n pull 50% weekend 1 Quote Link to comment

Jester
It was getting a sticky spot in the 3rd-4th gate. What ever the hell it is decided to just say fuck it and quit. If I hold it REAL hard in third it will work and fourth is there but it wont go in. All other gears seam fine. Fluid was changed to synth. about 5K miles ago. But yes, sixth was a little gravley. I love my truck and I wasn't willing to sacrifice the sixth gear for a NV4500. 2 Quote Link to comment
