Snake could be very much alive, it looks like the head end is to left out of frame and the tail end is wrapped around the boy. Likely not try to constrict and consume but rather there were multiple people holding said snake and it naturally wrapped it's self around him and is now in the process of slithering away.

My snake is alive, but just barely—cause I'm married.

Although,,,, now I think about it, it's never been wrapped around a little boys leg. bwwwhahahhahaaaaahah.

The snake eating the little girl was a re-enactment of a real situation.  It was from a show on Animal Planet.  National Geographic had nothing to do with it, the logo was added to make a meme from the press still from the show.
