Duncan
Sorry to ask. I shifted through a LOT of searches and couldn't come up with what car this was from. This regular shift pattern 5-spd was in the 510 wagon I imported, and I need to get a slave cylinder for it. Anyone know which slave will work with this? Thanks for your help! 84720FourWheel
Looks a lot like my trans. Looks like a 5 speed out of a 720 based on the top gear switch. Fs5w71b Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Yes, it looks like a 71B 5-speed. If its a non-US Market model, we won't be able to tell which car it came from. For example L18s were sold into the 80s in Japan, and L20B into mid-80s in AUS. A 280ZX slave will probably bolt up to it. 1 Quote Link to comment
Duncan
Thanks for the help guys. (except Mike, of course) Hey Mike, sorry my photos are improperly formatted. I could not find any "how-to" on formatting photos. Maybe you could send me a link? BTW, how do you breathe with your head so far up your ass? 3 Quote Link to comment
Dolomite
Looks like a zx 5spd to me, try that one. Pretty much any l series slave will work, some(620) have straight bleeders that are hard to get a piece of tubing on, but they all work in a pinch. I've had 510, 620, and zx on mine because of what was available at the time. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's an L series 5 speed made after 1980 but imported? From Japan? I don't know what the emissions standards were there but here, if this was 'imported' from Texas, this would be from a carbureted vehicle. Here, this would only be found on the 1980 2wd 720 truck. Any slave used on any 71B 4 or 5 speed should be fine. If this for use in a truck get a '77-'79 620 truck slave, the fitting is on the end for torsion bar clearance. If for use in a car get a 290z, 280zx or 810/Maxima, the fitting is on the side. If you want to ID the transmission precisely, pop it off, place in first and place a mark on the input and output splines. Have someone turn the input exactly 10 turns while you count the output turns. 2 3/4 turns... wide ratio, definitely a 720 truck transmission (most likely) 3 turns......... mid ratio, 810 or Maxima transmission 3 1/4 turns... close ratio transmission from a 280zx. (very unlikely as it has top gear switches in it) PL510 or A10? Not that it matters. Looks like a gear reduction starter on it. Pictures look fine to me. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Most any Datsun L or Z series slave will bolt up to it, the question is which one do you want? 510's have manually adjusting slaves with a threaded rod and a return spring, they must use the return spring or the pressure will pack up and destroy the thrust bearing and crank in the engine. Later, the Z cars (and others) use a self adjusting slave with a solid rod and no return spring. Trucks use a slave with the inlet coming straight out the front of the cylinder body. I believe any of these will work, providing you use the corresponding clutch fork. The manual adjust slaves use a fork with a hole in it. Quote Link to comment
Duncan
Thanks again folks. This is my first 510, and I have an Aussie Import that has had some stuff changed on it, so not having a bunch of 510's under my belt makes this a bit of a challenge sometimes. The existing slave has a solid rod and no springs, so I will assume it's a Z unit. Appreciate the help! 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
If the transmission has NMCA cast letters then its from a 910. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I have at least two 71B 5 speeds that were NMCA cast in Australia. One was an '85 CA18ET 200sx and the other a '85 or '86 720 gas engine 5 speed. Quote Link to comment
