Z-train
1) B/C model Mustangs were slightly faster. 450 to the D's 437 mph.; 2) Early Ds didn't have the dorsal extension and the tail wandered in high speed dives; 3) Camo did work on low level missions when viewed from above; a small tactical flight down low could get at least some concealment from a higher adversary, but of course there was no hiding a thousand bomber/thousand fighter strategic mission at high altitude. Bunch of non-sequiturs here. If the B/C's were faster then the unlimited/Reno guys would be using them. And mustangs were never built for low-level missions. When Mustangs were down on the deck it was on their way back from escort jobs and or towards the end and they had nothing else to do. Funny side note: The highest scoring Ace's in both theatre's didn't fly Mustangs. Quote Link to comment

Funny side note: The highest scoring Ace's in both theatre's didn't fly Mustangs. The B/C model was better at low altitude, but, could climb faster than a D model. The D incorporated many new upgrades and the bubble canopy was great for all around vision. Hence why so many fighters converted to it. The Razorback Mustang had limited rear view and thus the need for the Malcolm hood and the rear view mirrors added by their pilots. Highest Scoring Ace in Europe was Gabby Gabreski in a P-47 Thunderbolt at 28 confirmed kills Highest Scoring Ace in the PTO is Richard Bong in a P-38 Lightning with 40 confirmed kills 1 Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
George Preddy was the highest scoring Ace in a Mustang in the ETO with 26.83 Kills 1 Quote Link to comment
MarkB.
Very few B/C's survived to become warbirds. If I recall correctly at one point there were none flyable. The Reno racers were all D's because that's what was available. And, I'd note that the superfast Reno P-51 racers remove the bubble and put on a modified turtle deck with a low profile canopy. Maybe VTR could find a picture of Jeanne or Strega or Dago Red or Voodoo and you'd see what I mean. According to one Mustang website there are only 11 B/C survivors of which 6 are flying as of February 2017. Note that while the 8th air force was flying up high over Germany, The 9th air force and the RAF were down low over France, so yes, Mustangs did air-to-ground where they were found to be vulnerable to ground fire in the radiator. The Air Force, being a bunch of slow-learners, tried the Mustang for ground attack again in Korea and found out that, sure enough, Mustangs are vulnerable to ground fire in the radiators. 1 Quote Link to comment
VFR800
Sadly, the orbiter was pretty much destroyed when the building it was stored in collapsed due to lack of maintenance. Sadly, eight workers where killed in the collapse Sad indeed. 1 Quote Link to comment

I'm familiar with Dago Red. And In Korea,we wished we kept the Jug and scrapped the Mustang. Another side note: In total aircraft destroyed, the title goes to the Thunderbolt. Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
C47 not an original civilian DC3. Note the thick wing to fuselage filets. 1 Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
F86 Saber pilots soon found out that if you grease a MIG15 under the wing to fuselage joint the wing would separate. An easy kill on your way to "ace" classification. 1 Quote Link to comment
