Son_of_a_Datsun_Guy
V8 from a Camaro, preferably the newer LS motor.... You are building a Bumblebee powered 510... he's a Camaro. But seriously, need a lot more info before you get a real answer. Quote Link to comment

Thanks for the help. Without telling us what you have and have done to it, it's too soon for this. You don't mention suspension, tires or brakes being brought up to today's standards. Engine is the last thing, as almost any upgrade will be exceeding this 45 year olds ability to handle it. Drive your 510 and enjoy it for a couple of years first as you and your 510 improve. 1 Quote Link to comment

You are building a Bumblebee powered 510... he's a Camaro. Hey, I resemble that remark Son. it's an SR though, not an LS. Yellow and black with Nissan power FTW  To answer your question Mr Bee, a "good motor" for the 510 is the L16 it came with. We don't know if you have just a shell, or a running car, a sedan, or a wagon,,, nothing. Here's the thing, if you knew your shit, you wouldn't be asking this. You'd have done your homework, and IF you had questions you'd know how to ask them. I mean no disrespect, but the way you come off, it sounds like you're just swapping for the sake of swapping. Please man, use a different car if that's the case. Not enough 510s left for that stuff anymore, Dmike is absolutely right, build it from the ground up, or don't do it at all. 2 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Because we gave no info I am going to assume you have never worked on a car and I would suggest an L20b, doesn't get any easier than that 1 Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
Every new guy wants an SR20, might as well join the dreamers and all those projects that never get finished. But seriously, we need to know what you want to do with the car. Daily driver? Track car? Autocross? Little of each? You want it good in town, or on the freeway? Then the biggest question of all......what kind of fabrication skillz do you have, and/or how big is your budget? How much you can fab yourself (IE:welding), will make a huge difference on what swap you want to do. Quote Link to comment
Bumblebee510
Alright well sorry for being new and all but my car is a 71 2 door 510. I have basic upgrades like coil overs and rims. It has a L16 with dual side drafts. I would post pics but I'm using my cell phone. I should of been a lot more clear in my post. I was just wondering your guys thoughts on motor swaps. How much you can fab yourself (IE:welding), will make a huge difference on what swap you want to do. Bought. This is not a criticism... People who build their cars have a better grasp of and appreciation of what it can do. Building it up provides a satisfaction buying cannot. The transition to a more powerful engine is better thought out and with more caution. Car and driver grow along together progressively. A bought car tends to become boring quicker and owners tend to jump right to 'more power!!!" easiest swaps... Easy to somewhat more difficult. L18 and L20B same series engine as the L16 with the l20b being 3/4" taller. As close to a drop in swap as there is. L20B has about 20 more hp than an L16. Your intake and carbs will fit it. Z22 converted with L20B head to an LZ22 or LZ hybrid. Mixing and matching of stock parts makes this also a 'stroker motor' LZ23.... L20B or Z22 block bored with KA pistons L head and Z22 crank. More involved swapping of parts but a higher output 'big bore' motor. Involved swaps... Much more involved, needing money, planning, money, tools, experience, money, skills, fabricating and .... money. KA24E or KA24DE, SR20, VG30.... all are EFI engines with wiring, ECUs, fuel delivery, fitment problems and different transmissions, driveshaft shortening involvement. 2 Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
first off welcome to ratsun. first thing you should work on is getting some pics up of your ride! dont be sorry for being new, we are all still learning. spend some time reading through build threads and see how much is truly involved with a motor swap. and if you still have specific question by all means ask away. 1 Quote Link to comment

paradime
I smell the stink of a troll here. On his very first post dude throws out this conspicuously vague question about swapping a 510. Any butt plug with a fresh gmail account and a key board knows he’ll get hits on swap topic. Here we are 4 days later, no picts, and all we know is 71 2 door, L16 w side drafts, coil overs and” "rims"? I’ve only been here two years, but this is the third time I’ve seen this ignorant provocateur gaming shit. Beside, everyone know Littlerock is in Arkansas. I fail to see how even a newb could be this stupid, so there is but one conclusion we can make… Bailiff, Whack His Pee Pee. Quote Link to comment
kevwal
I did a search and there's also a Littlerock in CA. Don't scare the guy away. We were all new to this at some point. 1 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
And what's wrong with some bought, I enjoy giving money to other people to fabricate things for me. Well i guess its because I can. 2 Quote Link to comment

paradime
Trust me kevwal, I'm not trying to chase anyone off, I'm sharing a valid observation. We've repeatedly asked for specific information so we can get to know him, his skills, resources, etc. With that we could actually give him the best advice possible. Without this solid point of reference you can see what you get right here, yet another collection of random statements and subjective opinions. If this guy is actually real and wants to learn wether to stay with an L series. go V8, or rotary, turbo, N/A, or SC, he's going about it the wrong way. He started this thread, therefore he has a responsibility to participate. One short response in 4 days is not respectful of all these people interested in helping. If he's posting from a phone he can just as easily upload images to the bucket and link them here. He could respond to what is being said and answer questions. Absent that, I think it's more than reasonable to share my observation and the subjective opinion that I smell a whiff of troll. Mr. Bee is in the driver's seat and can prove me wrong any time he chooses. I agree, it's not easy being green, but that excuse will only get you so far. Quote Link to comment

yellowdatsun
If you just want a basic motor swap to a more modern fuel injected engine, the two best choices are KA24 and VG30. Either one makes for a good swap into a 510. The KA is easier, but also less powerful. If you can stand the extra work and fab time, the VG30 is a great engine. Quote Link to comment
paradime
Well said Mike. Perspective for all. Quote Link to comment
