Butch_6sic6
Hi guys I have just bought my first very own datsun 620 and I am having trouble identifying what type of trim/year it is... Car no : n620u 19970 Engine number : j15 158116 Produced : 19620 Will post pic of truck as well I'd plate ASAP Thanks Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
There should be a tag inside the door, as well. The date should be there. A pic of the entire truck would be very helpful Quote Link to comment
Tristin
I wonder if that number means its a u620. Is it 2dr, but with a very large extended cab wjndow and seating area and a tiny bed? Pictures would help. Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
And a j15 in a 620? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
J motors are common in Mexico europe and some other places. Why I dont know even dough the L motor was already out. Zed I think on here is from S Africa Quote Link to comment
Butch_6sic6
Yes I am from South Africa And to me it looks exactly like a normal 620 except the bed is way diffrent Maybe Africa imported 620u's without the cab at the back? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Is that Alfa GTV running or broke just like Italian car does. I always thought they were cool looking Maybe Nissan built the beds in S Africa for content law. as like Australia does. builds the bodys in country. Quote Link to comment
Butch_6sic6
As promised guys and gals Nice brain teaser for ya'll Quote Link to comment
Butch_6sic6
Oh yeah I almost forgot... It has a four speed column shift lol kinda cool Maybe that helps figuring it out Quote Link to comment
Butch_6sic6
Can someone tell me how much it would cost to.ship a 620 bed to SA? Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Way way more than a 620 bed is worth. Quote Link to comment
KlassicMotion
This is what I was going to say: "The stampings on that plate don't resemble the factory stampings on my plate. I find it interesting that the stamped numbers were not done with the same stamping tools, or neatly in a line either. The 1's 6's 0's and 9's are evident of this. Maybe they were assembled in S.A. and the same processes or quality control weren't used? Or could that Number plate have been "made-up" at a later time in history?" But then I actually read the bottom of the plate and it says it was "Manufactured for Datsun Motor Vehicle Distributors"... "Rosslyn Motor Assemblers...Suid Afrika" I think that explains everything. They probably just put whatever parts they had together to build the truck. Including a VIN plate from a different model, whatever engine was on the shelf, a bed from something else... etc. Just out of curiosity, does the wheel base match up? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Butch who cares? If you can put a license on there and drive it .just get it running and drive it. 620s are not worth alot of money. If this truck is cheap and can get it running get it. But if I lived in S Africa I would find a 510 or a Nissan Patrol or one of those toyota truck Landcruiser 70series 1 Quote Link to comment
KlassicMotion
^^ Agree. Just have fun with it regardless. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
None of that information will tell the date or trim. N = J15 engine U suffix = export U prefix = double-cab tag on the door jamb is a USA requirement, most other countries won't have it Quote Link to comment
KlassicMotion
If you don't have the tag on the door jam, then assuming the transmission is original and it's the Borg Warner trans, you can get the numbers off the top of the "bellhousing". The sequence goes like this: X XX XX XXXX The first X is the last letter of the year of manufacture. The 2nd and 3rd X's are the month of manufacture. The 4th and 5th X's are Date of manufacture. And the last four are the daily serial number. Same goes for the steering box. That info is straight out of the '72 620 service manual. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Since I don't think it was mentioned, I am 99% sure that's a 720 bed. Some markets had their lights mounted underneath the tailgate like a 620. Tailgate is definitely 720. This bed... 2 Quote Link to comment
jrock4224
freaks right tits the mass produced 720 bed .... Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
That is the early 720 bad used in the US market 1980 - 1983. The cab is also 720 in the US Market. 1984 - 1986 beds are smooth no tie downs. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
It is definitely a 620 cab. Quote Link to comment
Butch_6sic6
Thanks for all the info guys. I bought the truck for a measly R3500 that's about 380 USD lol In terms of getting it running.... You won't believe me when I show you the pics of the terrible condition of the lil J but it actually runs! Needs battery and alternator not charging, I drove it with a flat battery after jumping it for about 40km and it died at a intersection and that was that. Towed it home further in the middle of the night (scared shitless) Parked it around midnight. Going to start worrying on her this weekend maybe star a build thread. Quote Link to comment

'80-'82 have the lip, tie downs and a horizontal welded seam on the sides and tail lights along the bottom back '83-'84 are the same as above but tail lamps are in the upper corner of the box. '85-'86 corner tail lights and smooth seamless sides no lip also inner cargo lining. I have no idea what the tail gate is off. Quote Link to comment
